Put one speaker near the center of the TV and within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall. For a pair, place one on each side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart.
Can you use one HomePod as a TV speaker?
Yes. Apple supports one HomePod as the audio output for Apple TV 4K, so a second speaker is not required for the basic home theater setup. Place the HomePod as close as possible to the center of the TV and within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall, as Apple recommends.
This is the simplest configuration, but it does not create the left-right separation of a stereo pair. Apple’s setup documentation describes the pair as supporting home theater surround sound; it does not establish a room-size threshold or guarantee a particular improvement in perceived sound quality.
Should you get one HomePod or a stereo pair?
| Configuration | What it provides | Placement | Format notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| One HomePod | Apple TV 4K audio from one speaker; no left-right separation from a pair. | Near the TV’s center and within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall. | Available formats depend on the content and hardware. |
| Two HomePods as a stereo pair | Left-right stereo separation; Apple describes the pair as supporting home theater surround sound. | One on either side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart. | Apple lists Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1 support for a HomePod stereo pair. |
| HomePod mini | Can be used in Apple’s documented home cinema setup, but does not provide Dolby surround format support. | For two speakers, create a stereo pair and follow the pair placement guidance. | Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 are rendered in mono or stereo, not as those surround formats. |
Apple does not publish controlled room-size comparisons for these configurations, so choose based on whether you want a single-speaker setup or the stereo separation of a pair—not on an assumed room-size rule. Format support also depends on the program and hardware.

How far apart should HomePods be for Apple TV?
For a stereo pair, put one speaker on each side of the television, approximately 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart. Apple calls this the optimal spacing for surround sound. Keep both speakers in the same room as the Apple TV and assign the speakers and Apple TV to that room in the Home app.
To use the pair, create the stereo pair before assigning it to the room. Apple’s current TV guide also says the Apple TV 4K and HomePod speakers should be connected to the same network.

eARC is optional. It lets Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) receive audio from an eARC-capable television, including audio from an HDMI device connected to that TV. It is useful when, for example, you want sound from a console or DVD player connected to the television to play through HomePod speakers.
