On a Mac, “touch input” generally means fingers on a Multi-Touch trackpad—not touching the display. The trackpad senses movement, macOS recognizes familiar gestures, and apps can respond to those gestures through AppKit. Visible controls are normally operated with a pointer or keyboard, with gestures serving as an additional way to navigate or act.
What “touch input” means on a Mac
Apple’s macOS guidance describes Multi-Touch interaction through a Mac notebook’s built-in trackpad or an external Magic Trackpad. The gestures available depend on the Mac and its settings. Apple’s separate documentation for screen touches is in UIKit, a different framework; the macOS sources here do not establish that Macs have touchscreen displays. Apple’s Multi-Touch guide covers trackpad use, while Apple documents screen-oriented touch handling in UIKit.
How a trackpad gesture becomes an action
The trackpad senses finger movement, and its driver recognizes patterns such as pinches, rotations, swipes, and two-finger scrolling. At the app level, AppKit provides gesture recognizers and delivers recognized events through its event and responder systems. Its standard recognizers cover interactions such as clicking, pressing, panning, rotating, and magnifying. Apple’s AppKit gesture documentation describes these app-facing options.
For a specialized interaction that standard recognizers cannot express, an app may need lower-level trackpad touch events. Apple’s archived Cocoa Event Handling Guide explains that gesture events can travel up the responder chain if a view does not handle them, and advises preferring recognized gestures over raw touch handling unless there is a specific reason to use raw touches. That guide was updated in 2016; use current SDK documentation for version-specific implementation details.

Gestures you can use
Apple lists these common trackpad interactions; whether each is available depends on the Mac and the selected settings:
- Tap to click: Tap with one finger to click, if the setting is enabled.
- Secondary click: Click or tap with two fingers to open a contextual menu.
- Scroll: Move two fingers to scroll through content.
- Zoom: Pinch with two fingers to zoom in or out in supported contexts.
- Rotate: Rotate two fingers to turn supported content.
- Navigate or switch: Swipe between pages or use gestures for switching between full-screen apps and accessing apps, where supported.
- Force Click: On a Force Touch trackpad, press and then press more deeply for contextual actions and tactile feedback. This feature is hardware-dependent and is not available on every trackpad.
Apple’s Multi-Touch support page and Mac user guide describe the gestures and note that availability varies. To review or change them, open System Settings > Trackpad; options shown depend on the Mac.

How gestures relate to on-screen controls
A gesture can be a convenient way to perform an action, but it is not the same as touching a button on the display. For a visible control, use its usual pointer interaction—such as clicking—or an available keyboard command. Developers should likewise provide a conventional way to invoke critical actions rather than making them depend only on a trackpad gesture or touch event. Apple’s archived event-handling guidance specifically warns that users may not use a trackpad and recommends supplementing touch-event features with conventional command methods.
