Chrome M124 added machine-learning models to score suggestions in the desktop omnibox—the combined address and search bar—on Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS. Google says the change is intended to make webpage suggestions more precise and relevant by adapting the ranking system to patterns in how people use Chrome.
What Google changed in Chrome’s URL bar
Announced on April 29, 2024, the update replaced Chrome’s earlier hand-built and hand-tuned scoring formulas with machine-learning models for ranking omnibox suggestions. The omnibox can help users return to pages they have visited, find tabs and bookmarks, or search the web. Google says people use it “billions of times each day.” Google’s Chrome announcement describes the change as an improvement to how suggestions are scored, not a new address-bar interface or a separate product.
The announced rollout applies to desktop Chrome on Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS. Google’s announcement does not provide a numerical improvement in suggestion accuracy or user satisfaction, so the benefit is described qualitatively rather than as a measured percentage.
Why Chrome moved beyond hand-tuned formulas
Google said the older formulas worked, but were inflexible and difficult to adapt to new situations. A model trained on useful signals can adjust how it ranks results when patterns in user behavior reveal distinctions that fixed rules may not have captured. Chrome software engineer Justin Donnelly described the problem as inflexibility, not generally poor scoring: the omnibox could already feel “magical” at surfacing a wanted URL or query, but the hand-tuned system was harder to adapt. Donnelly’s explanation

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
How the model can change suggestion rankings
A quick return to the address bar
Google’s example concerns the time since a user last navigated. If someone opens a suggested URL and returns to the omnibox seconds later, the model can treat that short interval as evidence that the destination was not what they wanted. It then lowers that URL’s relevance during the next attempt. Google’s example of the learned signal
This illustrates the difference between a fixed rule and a learned scoring signal: engineers could have written a rule for rapid returns, but Google says the model surfaced the behavioral pattern as useful. It does not mean Chrome knows why a person returned, or that every quick return is interpreted the same way.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
How the scoring approach differs from fixed rules
| Question | Hand-tuned formulas | Machine-learning scoring |
|---|---|---|
| Adapting to new behavior | Google says the formulas were inflexible and difficult to adapt. | Google says models can be retrained using fresher signals and deployed periodically. |
| Finding useful signals | Signals and scoring logic are built and tuned by engineers. | Google’s quick-return example shows a pattern the model identified as useful. |
| Explaining an individual ranking | Rules can be inspected as explicit formulas. | The announcement does not explain how to interpret any particular model ranking. |
| Head-to-head results | not stated in Google’s announcement | Google did not publish a comparative benchmark or numerical uplift. |
How Google says the models may evolve
Google says it can gather fresher signals, retrain and evaluate models, then deploy updated versions periodically. It also describes possible specialized models for mobile, enterprise or academic users, and different locales. These are directions Google says the system could support; the announcement does not establish that all such specialized versions are already available. Google’s account of future model updates

The omnibox scorer is one part of Chrome’s broader use of machine learning, but it should not be confused with other features. In a June 2022 overview, Google described ML applications including image accessibility, real-time captions, Safe Browsing, and notification-prompt prediction, and said those updates used on-device models with user data staying on the device. Google also reported “2.5 times more potentially malicious sites and phishing attacks” in its Safe Browsing discussion; that figure concerns Safe Browsing, not omnibox suggestion ranking.
