If you mean your home Wi-Fi password, make it at least 16 characters long. Choose a unique passphrase made from random characters or several unrelated words. If you mean the password for your router’s settings, change the factory default and give it a separate, unique password.
What does “router password” mean?
People use “router password” for two different credentials:
- Wi-Fi password (passphrase): lets phones, computers, TVs, and other devices join your wireless network.
- Router administrator password: lets someone sign in to the router’s settings and change its configuration.
They protect different things, so do not reuse one for the other. CISA’s home-router guidance recommends changing the default administrative password.
How long should my router password be?
For the Wi-Fi passphrase, aim for at least 16 characters. CISA’s 2024 federal workplace guidance recommends passwords of at least 16 characters and explicitly applies that advice to WPA2 passphrases. It allows either randomized mixed-case letters, numbers, and special characters or a memorable passphrase made from unrelated words, and recommends using a unique password for each account. See CISA’s Secure Our World guidance for businesses and organizations.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
This is a practical recommendation, not a universal router limit. The sources do not establish how many characters every router model or firmware version accepts, or which characters each one permits. If setup rejects your passphrase, check the router’s manual or setup interface and use the longest strong, unique value it accepts.
Choose a passphrase you can use reliably
CISA presents randomized characters and unrelated words as alternatives; it does not say one is always better. Choose the approach that fits how your household connects devices and can enter the password accurately.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
| Approach | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Random characters | Use a generated, unique string. It can be difficult to type or remember, so a password manager can help. |
| Unrelated words | Use a memorable sequence of words that do not form a familiar phrase. CISA also describes 5–7 unrelated words as an option in its organizational security guidance; that is not a router-specific technical requirement. See CISA’s Four Cybersecurity Essentials for SLTTs. |
A password manager is optional: CISA recommends using one to generate and remember strong, unique passwords. You do not need to buy software just to follow the guidance; use a manager you already trust if it helps you keep the Wi-Fi and administrator credentials distinct. See CISA’s password-manager training.
Set both router passwords securely
- Check the wireless security mode. In the router settings, use WPA2 or a newer option if available. The 2024 CISA passage specifically discusses WPA2; password length alone does not correct an obsolete or insecure wireless configuration.
- Set the Wi-Fi passphrase. Use at least 16 characters, make it unique, and choose random characters or unrelated words.
- Replace the administrator default. Change the factory or default administrator password to a long, unique credential that differs from the Wi-Fi passphrase.
- Store the credentials safely. Use a password manager if that makes unique passwords easier to generate and retain.
- Keep router software updated. CISA’s wireless-network guidance includes keeping access-point software patched. That guidance is older, so use the router maker’s current update process for your model.
Does a longer password guarantee a secure router?
No. A strong passphrase is one part of protecting a network. The cited guidance recommends WPA2 or a newer available option and keeping router software patched as well as using strong credentials. The cited sources provide recommendations, not measured estimates of how long it takes to crack a home router password, so a specific cracking-time claim would not be justified.
