Place and secure the cooler as soon as you apply the paste. Once the cooler is mounted correctly and its fan or pump is connected, you can power on the PC. The routine exception is cleaning: if you used alcohol, let it evaporate completely before applying paste.
When to install the cooler and start the PC
Thermal paste is meant to sit between the CPU’s heat spreader and the cooler’s cold plate, filling microscopic gaps. Apply it, then set the cooler straight down promptly; do not leave the paste exposed while waiting for it to cure. Intel’s installation guidance likewise proceeds from applying paste to installing and fastening the cooler.
There is no general waiting period before startup. First make sure the cooler is firmly secured and connect its fan or pump. Paste curing, correct cooler installation, and drying after cleaning are separate matters: the first is usually unnecessary, the second is essential, and the third must be complete before you apply paste.
Apply paste and mount the cooler
- Check for paste already on the cooler. Some coolers have a factory-applied layer. If yours does, do not add another layer on top; follow the cooler’s instructions.
- Clean both contact surfaces if reusing a cooler. Remove the old paste from the CPU heat spreader and cooler base. Intel advises replacing the thermal interface material when reinstalling the processor or heatsink; Noctua gives similar cleaning and application guidance.
- Let the surfaces dry. If you used alcohol, wait until it has fully evaporated and the surfaces are visibly dry. Intel’s thermal-interface-material guidance says to allow alcohol to dry or dissipate. The time varies with how much you used, ventilation, temperature, and concentration, so use dryness—not a fixed number of minutes—as the test.
- Apply the amount and pattern specified for your paste and CPU. Intel gives a grain-of-rice-to-pea-sized amount as general guidance for common applications. That is not a universal measurement: follow the paste maker’s directions if they specify a different pattern.
- Place the cooler promptly. Lower it straight onto the paste. Let mounting pressure spread the compound unless the product instructions say otherwise; manual spreading can introduce air bubbles.
- Tighten evenly. Start all screws before fully tightening them, then alternate across the mounting pattern. Intel recommends diagonal or X-pattern fastening so pressure is distributed across the CPU.
- Connect the fan or pump, then start the PC. Follow the cooler’s instructions for the correct header and power connection.
When waiting is actually necessary
After cleaning with alcohol
Wait until the alcohol has completely evaporated before applying fresh paste. A wet surface is not ready for installation. You do not need to wait an additional period for the paste to cure after the cooler is mounted.

If the paste manufacturer specifies a break-in period
Most mainstream CPU pastes do not require you to leave the computer off after installation. Some compounds may have product-specific break-in guidance, so the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence. A break-in recommendation is not automatically a safety instruction to keep the PC unused. Noctua describes NT-H1 as stable over time while noting that some thermal compounds can take longer to reach full performance; see its NT-H1 datasheet. For other products, consult their official documentation, such as the ARCTIC MX-6 manual or Thermal Grizzly downloads.
If paste has been left exposed
A few minutes is normally not a problem. If the paste has been left out for a long time, visibly dried or skinned over, touched, or contaminated with dust, clean both surfaces and apply fresh paste rather than mounting the cooler on it.

If you remove the cooler after applying paste
Clean the paste from both the CPU and cooler base, then apply a fresh amount before reinstalling. Once the cooler has been lifted, the original imprint may no longer form an even layer on remounting. Intel and Noctua both recommend cleaning and replacing paste after cooler removal; see Intel’s application guide and Noctua’s FAQ.
How much paste should you use?
Use the amount and pattern recommended for your specific paste and CPU. Intel’s rice-grain-to-pea guidance is a broad reference, not a rule for every heat spreader. For example, Noctua’s NT-H1 instructions give different patterns by CPU size: one dot about 3–4 mm wide for small CPUs; four dots of about 2 mm near the corners plus one central dot about 3–4 mm for medium CPUs, including AMD AM4/AM5 and Intel LGA1700/LGA1851/LGA20xx; and a larger multi-dot pattern for large CPUs such as AMD TR4 or Intel LGA4677. These measurements apply to Noctua NT-H1, not all pastes. See its installation manual.

Do not add extra paste to compensate for uncertain mounting. Intel warns that too much can reduce cooling effectiveness and spill onto the motherboard; Noctua also cautions against excessive application. Unless the manufacturer calls for a different method, let the cooler’s mounting pressure spread the paste rather than spreading it by hand.
If temperatures are unusually high after startup
Waiting longer is usually not the fix for a temperature that climbs rapidly, causes immediate thermal throttling, or leads to shutdown. Shut the system down if temperatures appear unsafe, then check the installation and cooling system:

- Confirm the cooler is seated and secured evenly, and check for protective film left on its base.
- Verify that the fan or pump is running and connected to the correct header or power source.
- Check the paste amount and whether the cooler is compatible with the CPU.
- Review BIOS fan-control settings, CPU voltage and power limits, and case airflow.
Temperature readings vary with the CPU, workload, settings, and sensor behavior, so a single number does not prove that paste was applied incorrectly. Look at whether temperatures rise abnormally or the system throttles, and investigate mounting and cooler operation first.

Conventional thermal paste is not interchangeable with every material sold for CPU cooling. Phase-change pads have their own installation and heat-activation instructions. Liquid metal also requires product-specific handling and compatibility precautions; it is not a casual substitute for ordinary paste. Consult the manufacturer’s documentation, including Thermal Grizzly’s product instructions, before using either type.
