There is no universal number of days for keeping AI agent logs. Set a documented retention period for each log type according to its purpose, applicable legal and contractual requirements, security and incident-response needs, and privacy risk. Keep only the information you need, limit and protect access, and delete logs and their copies when the retention period ends.
Why AI agent logs need a specific retention policy
An agent trace can record more than a conventional application log: prompts and responses, tool or API calls, state changes, errors, timestamps, durations, and context identifiers. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency recommends capturing these kinds of events to monitor agent behavior and its interactions with models, files, memory, tools, and external services. That guidance describes what teams may log; it does not prescribe how long to keep it. See the Securing Agentic AI addendum.
Those records can also contain personal information, confidential business content, or credentials. A longer retention period may help investigate an incident, but it also leaves sensitive material available for longer and increases the work of securing and deleting it. Choose a period that meets a defined need rather than keeping traces indefinitely “just in case.”
Set different periods for different log classes
Do not treat every record generated by an agent as one undifferentiated log. Inventory the records you create, identify why each is needed, and assign a retention period to each class. The following categories are a practical starting point, not a prescribed classification from a standard.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Log class | Examples | Retention decision |
|---|---|---|
| Security audit trail | Authentication and authorization events, suspicious activity, and security-relevant actions | Set a period that supports required security review and incident response while meeting applicable legal, contractual, or records obligations. |
| Tool and API activity | Tool calls, external actions, and access to databases or files | Keep the fields needed to establish what the agent did and investigate problems. Avoid retaining sensitive request or response content unless it is necessary. |
| Prompts, outputs, and agent traces | Inputs and outputs, context identifiers, and state or memory changes | Assess whether the content is needed at all, whether it can be sanitized, and how its sensitivity affects access and retention. |
| Operational diagnostics | Errors, timing, duration, and performance information | Keep enough to diagnose and improve reliability; consider whether aggregate or de-identified data can meet the need without retaining full traces. |
| Business or regulated records | Agent-created records that also serve a business, legal, or regulatory purpose | Apply the requirements for that record category, which may differ from the period used for ordinary diagnostics. |
For every class, document its purpose, owner, fields collected, authorized users, retention trigger, and deletion method. NIST’s audit-trail guidance says system managers and administrators, with security personnel’s guidance, should determine how long audit data is maintained, whether on the system or in archives. It also emphasizes timely review and protecting audit-trail integrity and confidentiality. See NIST SP 800-12.
How to choose a retention period
- Identify the purpose. State what decision, investigation, or obligation each log class supports. If a field or record has no defined purpose, do not collect or retain it by default.
- Check the requirements that apply. Review the laws and regulations for your jurisdictions, contracts, records schedules, and any incident-response requirements. The right period depends on deployment context and data categories; no single legal period can be stated for every agent.
- Assess sensitivity and risk. Consider what could be exposed if the logs were accessed, altered, or retained longer than needed. NIST’s authentication guidance for verifier records is a useful analogy: where no mandatory retention rule applies, it calls for risk management that includes privacy and security assessments, and says subscribers should be informed of the policy. That guidance is specific to verifier records, not a general rule for agent logs. See NIST SP 800-63-4.
- Choose a period and trigger for each class. Specify when the clock starts—for example, creation or the end of a defined operational process—and how the log is disposed of at expiry. Keep any exception, such as a legal hold, controlled and documented.
- Review the policy when things change. Reassess it when the agent gains new tools, handles different data, changes its logging behavior, or becomes subject to new contractual or legal requirements.
Do you need to log every tool call?
Not necessarily every detail. You should decide which events and fields are necessary for security, operational monitoring, or accountability. Agent-security guidance supports monitoring actions and interactions, but does not mean that every prompt, response, or payload must be stored in full. A useful record may capture that an action occurred, when it occurred, and enough context to investigate it without retaining unnecessary content.

Before enabling full prompt or tool-payload capture, ask whether a less revealing record would meet the same need. Where appropriate, mask or sanitize sensitive values, or use hashing or encryption as additional safeguards. These measures do not replace a retention schedule: protected data still needs a defined expiry and deletion process.
Protect logs throughout their lifecycle
Retention is not just a setting on the primary log store. Include temporary debug logs, backups, exports, and copies in the policy. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet says: “Log data, temporary debug logs, and backups/copies/extractions, must not be destroyed before the duration of the required data retention period, and must not be kept beyond this time.” It also recommends protecting logs against unauthorized access, modification, and deletion.

Cloud retention settings are examples, not recommended agent policies
Logging platforms expose retention windows, but their settings reflect product capabilities and platform-specific policies—not a universal duration for AI traces.
| Service | Published retention detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud.gov | Cloud.gov says logs are searchable for six months and retrievable for up to twelve months after creation. It recommends that agencies keep independent exports when mission-specific eDiscovery, legal, or extended-retention needs require them. See Cloud.gov log documentation. | These are Cloud.gov service windows, which it says align with OMB M-26-14. They are not a general recommendation for agent logs. |
| Google Cloud Logging | Log bucket retention is configurable from one day to 3,650 days. The selected setting applies to all logs in that bucket, regardless of log type or whether they were copied from elsewhere. See Google Cloud log bucket documentation. | This is a product capability, not advice to keep any particular agent log for that long. A shared bucket setting can also apply to different log types together. |
How to turn the policy into a working control
- Inventory the data flow. List security events, tool and API calls, prompts and outputs, state or memory changes, errors, and performance records.
- Minimize what is captured. Decide which fields are essential for each purpose. Avoid routinely recording secrets or unnecessary personal data; use masking or sanitization where appropriate.
- Assign ownership and access. Name who owns each log class and who may read, export, or administer it. Protect logs against tampering and insecure transfer.
- Configure expiry and exceptions. Record the retention period, start trigger, deletion method, and any controlled legal-hold process for each class. Include backups and exports.
- Check the result. Confirm that expired logs and their copies are deleted, and revisit the schedule when requirements, data flows, or agent capabilities change.
Which guidance applies—and what it does not say
NIST’s final SP 800-92, Guide to Computer Security Log Management, was published in September 2006. NIST describes SP 800-92 Rev. 1 as an initial public draft published October 11, 2023, focused on high-level, organization-wide log-management planning; it should not be described as a final replacement. OWASP’s retention guidance and NIST’s audit-trail and verifier-record guidance help inform a policy, but none establishes one universal duration for AI agent logs.
