A PS5 DualSense takes about three hours to recharge, according to Sony, while a PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 takes about two hours from an empty battery. These are approximate, model-specific estimates—not a guaranteed time for every charger, battery condition, or starting charge.
How long does each PlayStation controller take to charge?

Sony describes these as approximate times, and the published descriptions are not identical test conditions. A controller that is only partly depleted should take less time than one starting empty, but Sony does not give a universal time for every charge level or USB power source.
How to charge your controller
PS5 DualSense
Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB Type-C cable, or use the separately sold DualSense Charging Station. Sony says the station can charge up to two controllers at once. The DualSense station is designed for DualSense controllers; it is not the DUALSHOCK 4 station.
PS4 DUALSHOCK 4
Connect the controller to the PS4 using its USB cable. Sony says it can charge while the console is on or in rest mode. The separately documented DUALSHOCK 4 Charging Station is made for that controller generation.

Charging from another USB device
Sony says a controller may be connected to a computer or another USB device using a compliant USB cable, but some devices may not charge it. Sony does not specify a revised charge-time estimate for these other power sources.
Will the controller charge in rest mode?
It can, provided the console supplies power to its USB ports in rest mode. The available setting depends on the console model and configuration.

PS5
On PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. Sony’s guidance lists Always or 3 Hours; the newer CFI-2000 model group also offers Adaptive, which adjusts USB charging based on the connected controller’s remaining charge. If USB power is disabled, the controller will not charge from the console while it is in rest mode. See Sony’s PS5 USB power guidance for current setting details.
PS4
On PS4, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Supply Power to USB Ports. Sony says that when the option is set to supply power for three hours, USB power is available for three hours after entering rest mode. See Sony’s PS4 USB power guidance.

How to tell when it is charging
- DualSense on its charging station: The light bar slowly blinks orange while charging and turns off when the controller is full.
- DUALSHOCK 4: The battery icon on the screen blinks while the controller is charging.
If the indicator does not show charging, first check that the cable is connected securely and that the USB port is supplying power. For rest-mode charging, verify the console’s USB power setting. Sony notes that some non-console USB devices may not charge a controller.

Starting charge, the USB power source, and battery condition can affect what you observe; Sony does not quantify the effect of each factor. Sony specifically notes that DUALSHOCK 4 battery life varies with use and with the environment in which the controller is used and stored.

If a controller does not appear to charge, consult Sony’s model-specific DualSense support or DUALSHOCK 4 support rather than assuming a particular charging accessory or cable will solve the problem.
