There is no scientifically established number of days that guarantees a habit will form. In a real-world study, participants took between 18 and 254 days to reach 95% of their modeled automaticity plateau. A 2024 review found that the few studies reporting timing produced medians of 59–66 days and means of 106–154 days, with individual estimates spanning 4–335 days. Those figures measure different things; none is a reliable deadline for any one person.
Why there is no single habit-formation deadline
A behavior does not switch from “not a habit” to “a habit” on a universal day. Researchers have measured habit strength and automaticity in particular groups performing particular behaviors. Results vary with the behavior, how often it is repeated, the context in which it happens, and the measure used.
The familiar 21-day rule is not established by the evidence described here. Nor should 66 days be treated as a replacement rule. It is a shorthand associated with one study’s results, not a promise that a habit will be automatic after that long.

Lally and colleagues enrolled 96 volunteers who chose an eating, drinking, or activity behavior to perform daily in a consistent context—for example, after breakfast—and followed the protocol for 12 weeks. Participants recorded whether they performed the behavior and completed the Self-Report Habit Index. Eighty-two provided enough data for analysis; an individual nonlinear model fit 62 participants, and 39 had a good fit.

The study reported how long participants took to reach 95% of their modeled automaticity plateau: 18 to 254 days. That is a wide range from a small study of selected daily behaviors, not a forecast range that applies to every habit. The often-cited 66-day figure is a median reported for modeled participants in secondary accounts; it is not a required duration for habit acquisition.
The authors described their finding this way: “With repetition of a behaviour in a consistent context, automaticity increases following an asymptotic curve which can be modelled at the individual level.” Lally et al., European Journal of Social Psychology (first published online in 2009; journal issue 2010).

What the 2024 review adds—and what it does not
A systematic review and meta-analysis by Singh and colleagues examined 20 studies involving 2,601 participants and health-related behaviors such as physical activity, drinking water, taking vitamins, flossing, eating a healthy diet, and reducing sedentary behavior. Only four studies reported a mean or median time to habit formation. Their study-level medians ranged from 59 to 66 days, their means from 106 to 154 days, and reported individual estimates spanned 4 to 335 days.

The 59–66-day figures are not a pooled average. They summarize differing results from a small subset of studies, and the review found substantial variation. It also rated 11 of the 20 studies as having high risk of bias and noted that direct timing evidence was relatively limited. Singh et al., Healthcare, published December 9, 2024.

Why the numbers differ
The Lally study and the later review address related questions, but their figures are not interchangeable. One reports time to a modeled automaticity threshold for selected behaviors; the review summarizes direct timing estimates from a small number of health-behavior studies. Study populations, behaviors, practice schedules, and measures differ as well. A mean, a median, and a range answer different statistical questions.
So, “about two months” may describe some study results, but it obscures the spread of estimates and should not be used as an individual deadline. The evidence supports allowing weeks or months and looking for a behavior to become easier and more reliably repeated in its usual context—not counting down to a guaranteed day.

What may help a behavior become more habitual
The 2024 review associated habit strength with several factors across the health-behavior studies it included. These are observed influences, not guaranteed techniques or universal cause-and-effect rules.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Frequency and timing: How often and when a behavior is practiced were associated with habit strength.
- Behavior type: The behavior itself mattered; results for one kind of action do not automatically transfer to another.
- Personal choice and judgments: Self-selected behaviors and affective judgments were among the factors associated with stronger habits.
- Regulation and preparation: Behavioral regulation and preparatory habits also featured in the review’s findings.
- Morning practice: Morning practices generally showed greater strength in the reviewed evidence, but this does not establish that mornings work best for everyone.
In Lally and colleagues’ study, repeating a behavior in a consistent context was central to the method, and more consistent performance was associated with a better fit to the modeled habit curve. A practical implication is to connect an action to a cue or context you can repeat, rather than relying only on motivation. The study does not establish that perfect daily adherence is necessary.
How to use the evidence when building your own habit
- Choose a specific behavior. Define an action you can recognize as done, rather than a broad aspiration such as “be healthier.”
- Attach it to a repeatable context. Pick a cue you encounter reliably—such as a regular point in an existing routine—so the behavior has a stable place to happen.
- Track whether it happened. A simple record can help you see whether you are repeating the behavior in that context. Tracking was part of the Lally study method; no particular journal or product is required.
- Look for increasing automaticity, not a day-count. Notice whether starting and repeating the action in its usual context becomes more natural over time. Do not assume a calendar milestone means the process is complete.
What if you miss a day?
In Lally and colleagues’ study, missing one opportunity did not materially affect habit formation. That is reassuring about a single lapse in that specific study; it does not show that repeated or prolonged inconsistency never matters. Resume the behavior at the next suitable opportunity and return to its usual cue instead of treating one missed occasion as proof that you must start over.
