A refrigerator that stays closed keeps food cold for about 4 hours during a power outage, according to FoodSafety.gov’s chart, last reviewed August 8, 2024. Keep the door shut. If the outage lasts longer, use a reliable thermometer and the food-specific guidance below to decide what to keep; discard refrigerated perishables that were above 40°F (4°C) for two hours or more.
What to do while the power is out
- Keep the refrigerator door closed. Opening it lets cold air escape and can shorten the time food stays cold.
- Track the outage. The roughly four-hour estimate applies to a closed refrigerator; it is not a guarantee for every appliance or starting temperature.
- Check the temperature if you can. An appliance thermometer can show whether the refrigerator stayed at 40°F (4°C) or below. A thermometer helps assess conditions but does not extend safe holding time.
- After four hours, assess perishables individually. Follow the official chart rather than assuming every item must be discarded or is safe.
FoodSafety.gov’s guidance is to discard perishable food that has been above 40°F (4°C) for two hours or more. If the surrounding temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is one hour. Do not taste food to judge its safety: smell and appearance cannot reliably show whether it is safe.
Which refrigerated foods should you check?
Pay particular attention to meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, leftovers, and other refrigerated perishables. FoodSafety.gov’s power-outage food chart gives item-by-item keep-or-discard guidance. The distinctions matter: for example, some hard cheeses may be kept while soft cheeses should be discarded. Check the chart for the specific food instead of applying a single rule to everything in the refrigerator.

A closed freezer holds cold much longer than a refrigerator: FoodSafety.gov estimates approximately 48 hours if full and 24 hours if half-full. These are approximate freezer holding times, not refrigerator times.

Frozen food that still has ice crystals and feels cold as if refrigerated may be refrozen, though quality can decline. Some foods have specific exceptions, so consult the FoodSafety.gov chart before deciding. Do not treat the freezer’s estimated holding time as proof that every item remains safe.
