YouTube can automatically archive a continuous livestream that lasts less than 12 hours. If a stream runs longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. If you need the replay, end the broadcast before the 12-hour mark and keep a local recording as a backup.
How long can a YouTube podcast livestream run and still be archived?
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. The guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. Treat 12 hours as the practical upper limit for one broadcast when preserving a YouTube replay matters; do not plan to end exactly at the boundary.
YouTube’s encoder instructions likewise say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in YouTube Studio’s Live tab. YouTube Help: Archive live streams · YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder

The 12-hour guidance concerns whether YouTube captures the live broadcast as an archive. It does not establish how long a completed replay remains available. YouTube’s archive guidance explains that creators can manage an archive’s visibility or delete it, but it gives no fixed retention period. So there is no supported number of days to promise for how long a completed podcast replay will remain on YouTube.

How to protect a long podcast replay
- Keep each broadcast under 12 hours. If you need a replay, plan a shorter session rather than relying on an over-12-hour stream to be captured.
- For longer programming, use separate broadcasts. This follows from YouTube’s single-stream threshold; it is not a guarantee that a particular restart workflow will be interruption-free. After each broadcast, check that its archive appears in the channel’s Live tab.
- Record a local backup. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive. A separate recording gives you another copy if an archive is not captured or is later unavailable.
- If the archive exists but viewers cannot see it, check visibility in YouTube Studio. Creators can change an archive’s privacy setting.
Archive replay and live DVR are different
DVR controls whether viewers can pause or rewind while a stream is live; it is not a retention rule for the finished replay. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams
Or let it run in the cloud
If your podcast uses uploaded recordings and you want a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not going live from a camera, and does not change YouTube’s archive-duration guidance. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
