In the comparisons available, Lidl and Aldi usually cost less than traditional supermarkets, while Walmart is also a low-price contender in the U.S. There is no universal cheapest store: results depend on location, what is in the basket, how comparable products are selected, and whether loyalty prices apply. U.S. and UK figures below come from separate studies and should not be compared directly.

What U.S. price comparisons show

Consumers’ Checkbook’s national supermarket comparison, last updated in November 2025, priced a 150-item basket across seven metro areas: Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. In that study, ALDI prices were 30–40% below the all-store average, and Lidl prices were about 20–25% below it. Those percentages compare each chain with the average, not directly with one another or with Walmart. Consumers’ Checkbook’s national comparison also placed Walmart among consistently low-priced conventional supermarkets, typically 12–30% below the average in each area.

These figures describe a multi-city basket, not a guaranteed checkout total for every store or household. Checkbook notes that discounters carry mostly their own brands and a more limited selection of brands and package sizes. It therefore used a modified basket for ALDI, Lidl, and Trader Joe’s. The study also points to smaller store formats and lower overhead as contributors to discounters’ prices.

A regional result is not a national price gap

In a separate Delaware Valley comparison, also last updated in November 2025, ALDI prices were 35% below that region’s all-store average and Lidl prices were 26% below it. Checkbook compared per-unit prices and, where needed, substituted conventional grocers’ cheapest comparable store brands. These are regional results, not national figures or a direct Lidl-versus-Walmart calculation. See the Delaware Valley comparison.

What the UK basket shows

Which?’s September 2026 comparison put its 93-item basket at an average of £159.48 at Aldi, £161.48 at Lidl with Lidl Plus, and £161.84 at Lidl without Plus. Asda averaged £186.71. The same list reported £187.71 at Tesco with Clubcard, £188.95 at Sainsbury’s with Nectar, £192.93 at Morrisons with More, and £223.38 at Waitrose. These are UK prices for that month and basket; they do not answer the U.S. comparison and do not include Walmart. Which?’s monthly supermarket comparison tracks up to 200 branded and own-label products daily during each month and uses fieldworkers where online prices are unavailable.

In this particular UK basket, Aldi’s average was £2 below Lidl’s price with Lidl Plus. Lidl Plus reduced Lidl’s reported total by 36p compared with its price without Plus. Other supermarkets’ figures also distinguish loyalty-card prices, so a comparison should make clear whether the shopper qualifies for the displayed price.

Why basket design changes the answer

  • Brands and sizes: Lidl and Aldi offer a narrower range, with more own-brand products, than many traditional supermarkets. An exact brand-for-brand match may not be possible.
  • Comparable products: A fairer comparison can use similar goods and package sizes, with per-unit prices showing differences that sticker prices hide. Checkbook’s Delaware Valley study used per-unit pricing and comparable low-cost store brands where needed.
  • Loyalty offers: A card or app price can change the total. Compare the price you can actually claim, not just a promotional price displayed in a basket.
  • Availability and range: A low basket price is useful only if the store carries the products and sizes you need. Limited choice may mean buying substitutes or making another trip.

What an older Long Island study can—and cannot—tell you

A study by Katrijn Gielens, Professor of Marketing at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, tracked 27 Long Island stores from April 2019 through March 2020. The report was commissioned by Lidl. For prices collected in the first week of March 2020, it reported Lidl prices 33.8% below Stop & Shop and 39.6% below King Kullen. After Lidl entered the market, the study found no observable price differences between Lidl and Aldi or Walmart. These are historical findings from one market, not evidence of current shelf prices. How to use the comparisons for your own shop

  1. Start with your location. Store prices and the relevant competition vary by market; a seven-city U.S. average or a UK monthly tracker cannot guarantee the price at your nearest branch.
  2. Build a realistic list. Include the brands, package sizes, and products you actually buy. If a discounter does not carry an exact match, compare a similar product rather than assuming the item is identical.
  3. Check unit prices and loyalty conditions. Compare the cost per ounce, pound, or other useful unit, and include a loyalty-card price only if you will use the required account or app.
  4. Factor in selection and availability. Consider whether the store has the full range you need; a low price on a partial basket may not produce the lowest overall shopping cost.

The published evidence supports a broad pattern—discount grocers often price below conventional chains—but it does not establish a single current winner for every shopper. In the U.S. data, Walmart also ranks as a low-priced conventional chain, and Checkbook does not publish one national Lidl-versus-Walmart percentage. For a personal answer, the most useful comparison is a matched list using local prices and the offers you can actually claim.
