LEGO bricks grip because studs on one piece wedge between the internal tubes and side walls of the piece above; LEGO calls the resulting hold clutch power. For a compatibility check, first identify the part’s system and size, then compare its shape and dimensions, and use its number and color—not appearance alone—to find a replacement.
How do LEGO bricks hold together?
LEGO explains that studs become wedged between the internal tubes and the sides of the brick above. That frictional hold is called clutch power. LEGO’s help page credits Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen with discovering that evenly spaced internal tubes improve clutch power, helping models stay together as they grow. The company describes the connection this way: “The studs get neatly wedged in between the tubes and the sides of every brick making them stick together firmly.” LEGO’s explanation of how bricks work concerns its brick system; it should not be taken as a description of every specialized connection.
What basic building rules help check fit?
Bricks and plates
For common elements, LEGO’s comparison guide says three flat 1×1 plates stacked together reach the height of one 1×1 brick. Use this as an orientation aid when planning ordinary brick-and-plate builds, not as a measurement rule for every specialized piece. LEGO also recommends a brick separator when separating tightly held bricks because of their clutch power. LEGO’s brick guide
Technic parts
Technic uses a different building system from the common stud-and-tube brick system. A connector or beam should therefore be checked by the connection it is designed to make, rather than assuming that ordinary brick stacking explains its fit. LEGO’s Pick a Brick lists Technic connectors and beams as categories and supports uploading a parts list, but that does not establish universal compatibility across every generation or brand. DUPLO and regular LEGO
LEGO says DUPLO bricks are twice the size of regular LEGO bricks and that the systems can be mixed. That broad statement does not mean every DUPLO and regular element attaches directly in every orientation; check the specific pieces and intended connection. LEGO’s brick guide
Do old LEGO bricks fit new ones?
Yes, according to The LEGO Group. In a quality statement dated 1 November 2018, the company says that elements made more than a generation ago still fit those made today. It also says each element is tested for durability qualities including breaking and clutch power. This is LEGO’s claim about LEGO elements, not a guarantee covering third-party parts. How to identify a replacement LEGO piece
- Find the set number. Use it to locate the building instructions or the relevant LEGO service route. LEGO’s help page on identifying set and piece numbers explains where to look.
- Identify the part. Newer instructions list an element number. Many pieces also have a four- or five-digit design number molded on the part, often inside. Note the piece’s color as well as its number; similar-looking pieces are not necessarily the same element.
- Search LEGO’s replacement-pieces service or Pick a Brick. LEGO says element and design numbers can be used in these routes. Search results do not guarantee that a specific piece is currently offered or available in your region.
- Check the connection system and geometry. Confirm whether the missing piece is a standard brick or plate, a Technic connector or beam, or another specialized element. Compare the intended connection and orientation, not just the color or silhouette.
What a compatibility check can—and cannot—tell you
LEGO’s guidance supports checking system, scale, function, geometry, and part identification. It does not provide a universal home test for every specialized element, a controlled numerical comparison of clutch force, or proof that third-party parts will fit or perform the same way. For a particular replacement, the element or design number, color, intended connection, and current listing are more useful than a general claim that two pieces look alike.
