Kevin Mitnick died on July 16, 2023, aged 59, after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer, according to an announcement from his family and KnowBe4. He became notorious for unauthorized computer access and years as a fugitive, then worked as a cybersecurity consultant and author after prison.
How did Kevin Mitnick die?
Mitnick died peacefully on July 16, 2023, at age 59, following a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. His family and KnowBe4 announced his death on July 20, 2023. KnowBe4’s announcement gave the age, cause and length of his illness; The Washington Post also attributed the cause to a KnowBe4 spokesperson in its obituary.
Why was Kevin Mitnick famous?
Mitnick became widely known for unauthorized computer access and for remaining a fugitive for more than two years before his 1995 arrest. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to several counts of wire fraud and other cybercrimes and received a five-year prison sentence, according to The Washington Post.
His activity was not simply a matter of breaking through technical defenses. The Post described social engineering—deceiving people into disclosing confidential information—as a major part of his reported methods. Mitnick later described his own motivation to a Senate committee as “a quest for knowledge, the intellectual challenge, the thrill and the escape from reality,” as quoted by the Post. That account of his motivation helps explain his perspective, but it does not change the criminal conduct to which he pleaded guilty.

What did Mitnick do after prison?
After his release in 2000, Mitnick became a cybersecurity consultant and author. KnowBe4 said he joined the company as Chief Hacking Officer and a partial owner in November 2011. His later security work was a new chapter in his career; it does not erase the convictions that made him notorious.
Mitnick also wrote books about hacking and security. Mitnick Security’s biography lists Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the World’s Most Wanted Hacker, his memoir, alongside The Art of Deception, The Art of Intrusion and The Art of Invisibility.

How should his reputation be understood?
Mitnick’s public image combined a criminal case, media attention, his own public persona and the later security career. KnowBe4’s 2023 announcement called him “the world’s most famous hacker,” a characterization from his employer and business partner rather than an independently established ranking. KnowBe4 founder Stu Sjouwerman also argued that Mitnick was really the most famous “social engineer” of his time. The Washington Post’s account of his methods gives context for that emphasis, while its reporting on his guilty plea grounds the story in the criminal case.
