iPhone apps do not use iPad-style split-screen windows. Apple says an iPhone app displays one scene at a time. iPhone multitasking instead means switching between apps and, for supported video or FaceTime experiences, using Picture in Picture while another app is open. Developers should make that transition feel seamless by preserving the person’s place, managing work that continues in the background, and handling scene lifecycle events correctly.
Can iPhone apps use split screen?
No—not as side-by-side app windows. Apple’s UIKit “App and environment” documentation states, “On iPhone, your app only shows one scene.” Apple describes multiple simultaneous app scenes for platforms such as iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, rather than iPhone.
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines section on multitasking describes iPhone multitasking as moving between apps and using FaceTime or video in Picture in Picture while using another app. That is different from keeping two independent apps visible side by side.
What should an iPhone app do when someone switches away?
Design for interruption: people may leave an app at any point and return later. The app should preserve enough context to let them continue the task without reconstructing where they were or repeating completed work.

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines put it plainly: “Because you don’t know when people will initiate multitasking, your app or game always needs to be prepared to save and restore their context.” The guidance is in the “Multitasking” section.
- Save meaningful progress. Preserve the current document, form, conversation, playback position, or workflow step as appropriate to the app.
- Restore the same task. On return, show the person the relevant screen and state rather than restarting the app’s main flow.
- Keep background work purposeful. Apple advises completing work in the background when it no longer needs user input. If a task depends on a choice or action from the person, do not silently treat it as finished.
- Use notifications sparingly. Notify people when they need to know that work completed; avoid notifications that add no useful information.
How should developers handle the iPhone scene lifecycle?
UIKit delivers lifecycle events for individual scenes, and scenes can occupy different states. In a scene-based app, lifecycle handling belongs in scene delegate methods rather than being treated only as a single process-wide app state. Apple’s app lifecycle documentation covers the app and scene lifecycle, while its migration guidance describes moving lifecycle responsibilities to scene delegate methods.

Apple’s current transition guidance says the scene lifecycle is required for apps built with the latest SDK beginning in iOS 27. This is version-specific guidance: developers should check Apple’s current documentation and SDK requirements when planning or shipping an app, rather than treating the transition date as a general rule for every existing app.

On platforms where an app can have multiple scenes, Apple notes that scenes may share app resources. If two scenes access shared data structures, the app must coordinate that access; inadequate synchronization can lead to corruption or unexpected behavior. For a design decision, ask what the task requires:
- Does work continue without the person’s input? If so, consider appropriate background completion and communicate only when useful.
- Must the person return to the same point? Save and restore the task’s meaningful state.
- Is it video or a call? Consider whether Picture in Picture is the relevant multitasking experience.
- Does the target platform support multiple scenes? If yes, plan for per-scene lifecycle handling and coordination of shared resources.
