Invisible text watermarks are statistical patterns embedded in a model’s word choices—not hidden characters or metadata. During generation, a watermarking system subtly changes the probabilities of possible next tokens; a detector later checks whether the finished text contains the expected pattern. A match can offer a clue about the text’s provenance, but it cannot prove who wrote, owns, or is responsible for it.
How a watermark gets into generated text
A language model produces text one token at a time. A token may be a whole word, part of a word, or a character. At each step, the model assigns likelihoods to possible next tokens. A watermarking method can make small adjustments to those likelihoods so that, across many choices, the generated passage follows a pattern that can later be detected.
The signal is in the statistical pattern of token choices. It does not have to appear as a special character, unusual punctuation, or a field in the document. Google DeepMind describes SynthID as adjusting token probability scores; OpenAI describes textGrain as using a secret pattern in token choices and multiple adjusted likelihood distributions keyed to different choices. These are examples of the general approach, not descriptions of identical systems. (Google DeepMind on SynthID; OpenAI on textGrain)
How a detector checks for the signal
A detector evaluates the token choices or scores in a passage against the pattern expected for a supported watermarking system. In Google DeepMind’s description, SynthID compares the observed score pattern with expected watermarked and unwatermarked patterns. The check is therefore system-specific: a detector needs to know what signal to look for, and a detector for one implementation should not be assumed to recognize every provider’s watermark. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This differs from a post-hoc AI-text classifier, which estimates whether text resembles machine-generated writing without looking for a deliberately embedded signal. It also differs from file metadata, which is information stored alongside a document rather than a pattern carried by the wording itself. A watermark detector can report a match or no match; the meaning of either result depends on the system and text being checked. (OpenAI)
Why text watermarks can be hard to detect
Text offers fewer opportunities to embed a signal than images or audio, and ordinary editing can alter the token pattern. NIST notes that text watermarks can be sensitive to even small changes and that editing may dilute the signal. (NIST overview)

Length and variety
Google DeepMind says SynthID works best on longer responses with varied wording, such as an essay or script. Longer, more varied text provides more token choices across which a statistical pattern can appear. The company says the method can tolerate some cropping, small word changes, and mild paraphrasing, but these are vendor-described capabilities rather than a guarantee for every passage or editing history. (Google DeepMind)
Factual, fixed, and transformed text
Google says the method is less effective when a factual prompt leaves little room to adjust token probabilities without risking accuracy, or when the model is reproducing a fixed output such as a known poem. It also says thorough rewriting or translation can substantially reduce detection confidence. These limitations reflect the basic trade-off: the wording must remain useful and correct, while the watermark depends on choices in that wording. (Google DeepMind)

What a positive or negative result means
A positive result is a provenance clue: it indicates that the checked text matched a supported watermark pattern. By itself, it does not establish a particular person’s authorship, ownership, legal responsibility, disclosure obligations, or how much a human contributed. OpenAI explicitly cautions that its watermarking approach cannot answer those questions. (OpenAI)
A negative result means only that the detector did not find the supported signal in the text it examined. The text might have come from a system the detector does not support, be too short to provide a useful signal, or have been edited enough to weaken the pattern. It does not prove that a person wrote the text. (Google DeepMind; OpenAI)

For these reasons, a watermark is not a universal AI detector. It can complement other ways of assessing provenance, but the sources described here do not establish a matched, independent comparison of system accuracy or detection rates. Google DeepMind itself says SynthID is not a “silver bullet” for identifying AI-generated content. (Google DeepMind)

Google DeepMind announced SynthID text watermarking for Gemini app and web outputs on May 14, 2024. The company describes the method as designed to scale and as compatible with most text-generation models; that compatibility statement is Google’s characterization, not an independently established guarantee for every model. OpenAI’s announcement dated October 5, 2026 says it is introducing text watermarking to eligible ChatGPT and Codex users across plans in the EU in response to the EU AI Act. This is a geographically and temporally bounded rollout statement; availability can change, so consult OpenAI’s announcement for current scope. (OpenAI announcement, October 5, 2026)
The systems illustrate why “AI text watermark” does not name one universal mechanism or detector. Their embedding and detection details are system-specific, and the cited descriptions do not provide a quantitative head-to-head ranking on robustness, false positives, or false negatives.
