You can pay a participating merchant abroad with UPI by enabling international payments in a supported app, scanning a supported merchant QR code, checking the foreign-currency and rupee amounts shown, and approving with your UPI PIN. It does not work at every merchant in a country, and there is no single published exchange-rate formula, fee, or settlement timetable that applies to every bank, app, and payment corridor.

Can you use UPI internationally?

Yes, in some locations and at participating merchants. International UPI acceptance is a QR-based merchant payment, not a guarantee that any QR code—or every merchant in a supported country—will accept your UPI account. You need an eligible bank account and app with the international feature enabled, and the merchant must be connected through a supported local acceptance partner. NPCI’s UPI Global Acceptance page directs users to current enabled-country, bank, and app information.

Availability can change as banks, apps, and local network partners join or update arrangements. NIPL describes the service as working through international network partners; its interoperability overview and NPCI’s current eligibility information are better guides than assuming countrywide acceptance. For example, NIPL reported that UPI merchant acceptance with Fonepay launched in Nepal in March 2024 and had passed 100,000 cross-border person-to-merchant transactions by August 2024. That is a dated milestone, not a current transaction count or a guarantee that a particular Nepalese merchant accepts UPI.

How an international UPI payment works

  1. Enable international payments. In a supported UPI app, activate UPI Global or International for the specific eligible bank account you intend to use. The exact label and setup steps vary by app.
  2. Confirm the merchant accepts it. Look for a BHIM UPI or relevant network-partner QR acceptance sign, and ask the merchant if you are unsure. A QR code alone does not prove it is supported.
  3. Scan the merchant QR. Use the UPI app to scan the supported code and proceed to the payment confirmation screen.
  4. Check the amounts and any disclosures. Review the merchant’s local-currency amount and the corresponding INR amount. Check any exchange rate or fee shown before authorizing.
  5. Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the PIN only if the displayed transaction details are correct. NPCI says the customer and merchant should receive a notification when the transaction succeeds.

The app is where you see and approve the payment instruction. International partners provide merchant acceptance in the destination market, while participating Indian banks and the UPI/NIPL arrangements support the connection. NIPL describes real-time debit visibility through international network partners; that customer-facing visibility does not, by itself, specify when or in what currency the merchant is paid.

Will you be charged in rupees or local currency?

The merchant’s price is generally presented in the destination currency, while NPCI instructs users to review both the foreign-currency amount and the INR amount on the final screen. The rupee figure shown there is the practical amount to inspect before you approve. If a rate or fee is displayed, review it alongside both amounts; consult the bank or app terms for details that are not shown on the screen.

NIPL describes its cross-border person-to-merchant foreign-exchange margins and fees as “notably low” and promotes transparent foreign-exchange rates. This is a general product characterization, not an exact markup, a universal fee promise, or proof that UPI will cost less than a card, cash, or another travel-payment option. The official materials do not publish one conversion formula or rate-setting time for every corridor and provider combination.

To compare payment methods for a specific purchase, compare the actual rupee cost for the same local-currency amount, the rate and when it is applied, any separately stated fee, whether the method works at that merchant, and the available dispute or refund support. Use the current terms from the relevant bank, app, card issuer, or travel-money provider; there is no supported basis for saying UPI always has the best rate or widest acceptance.

How does settlement work—and what is not specified?

Settlement is the movement of funds among payment-system participants and the merchant’s acquiring arrangement after the customer authorizes a payment. NPCI’s general UPI FAQ and product information says a merchant receives funds into its pool or bank account according to its agreement with its acquirer. That is general merchant guidance, not an international-corridor payout-time guarantee.

NIPL’s 2023–24 financial statements, signed on 15 May 2024, said NPCI handled settlement of funds for international scheme transactions at the reporting point. The statement does not set out the complete processing chain for every international QR purchase. Public material cited here does not establish a universal present-day payout time, merchant settlement currency, conversion stage, or intermediary sequence across all markets.

  • Do not assume the foreign merchant receives INR.
  • Do not assume every customer’s conversion is made at the same processing stage or rate.
  • Do not treat the user’s successful authorization or debit notification as proof of an instant merchant payout in local currency.

Those backend details depend on the corridor and acquiring arrangement. For a specific merchant or market, the relevant acquirer or payment partner is the source for its payout terms.

International UPI acceptance, NRI support, and UPI One World are different

UPI Global Acceptance: Indian users paying merchants abroad

This is the outbound use case: an Indian UPI user pays a participating overseas merchant by scanning a supported QR code and authorizing from an eligible linked bank account in an enabled app.

UPI for NRIs: supported international mobile numbers

Eligible NRE or NRO account holders may be able to link supported international mobile numbers through participating banks and apps, subject to their bank’s terms. NPCI’s UPI for NRIs live-members page lists participating options; its country and member information can change, so confirm current eligibility with NPCI and your bank or app. This is account and mobile-number support, not the same feature as overseas merchant acceptance.

UPI One World: visitors paying merchants in India

UPI One World is the reverse direction: an international visitor uses an app-based prepaid wallet to pay Indian merchants. NPCI’s 16 February 2026 announcement described a pilot for delegates from over 40 countries at the India AI Impact Summit, with wallet issuance at named Delhi locations, passport and visa verification, and loading by international card. The announcement specified pilot limits of INR 25,000 per transaction, up to two wallet loadings per month, and INR 50,000 total per month; unused balance could be returned to the original payment source subject to foreign-exchange regulations. These terms describe that summit pilot, not a standing offer or general visitor entitlement. The announcement also noted exclusions for some countries under regulatory guidance.

What to check before paying

  • Confirm the country, bank account, and app are currently eligible using NPCI’s international acceptance information.
  • Ask whether the particular merchant accepts the supported UPI QR arrangement.
  • Before entering your PIN, check the foreign-currency total, the INR amount, and any rate or fee disclosed by the app.
  • If the displayed amounts or terms are unclear, do not authorize; ask the merchant or check your bank/app’s applicable terms.
  • For settlement or refund timing, check the merchant’s acquiring arrangement rather than inferring it from the instant payment notification.
