India’s power grid is one interconnected, synchronous network linking regional and state grids. Electricity moves from power plants through transmission lines and substations, across inter-state and inter-regional links, and into state networks before distribution systems deliver it to consumers. GRID-INDIA coordinates operation of the interconnected system; it does not own every line or substation.

How electricity travels through India’s grid

A useful way to understand the system is to follow its broad layers. The National Electricity Plan describes the National Grid as including generating-station evacuation systems, inter-regional links, the inter-state transmission system (ISTS), and intra-state systems run by State Transmission Utilities (STUs). These regional and state grids are connected and operate synchronously at a common frequency.

  1. Generation and evacuation: Power plants connect to the grid through infrastructure that carries their output away from the generating station.
  2. Bulk transmission: High-voltage transmission lines carry large quantities of electricity toward load centres.
  3. Inter-regional and inter-state links: Transmission connections move power across regional and state boundaries.
  4. State transmission: State networks carry electricity onward within each state.
  5. Distribution: Distribution systems take power from the transmission network toward end users.

This is a system map, not a traceable route for the electrons used by a particular home or business. Electricity flows through a connected network, and the cited plan does not identify a specific generator-to-consumer path.

What transmission lines and substations do

Transmission lines

Transmission lines provide the long-distance connections that move bulk electricity between generating areas, regional networks, states and load centres. The national system includes both inter-state and intra-state transmission; the utilities responsible for particular assets depend on the network and jurisdiction.

Substations

Substations are part of the high-voltage transmission infrastructure. They provide connection points within the network and are associated with the voltage levels used in transmission. POWERGRID, for example, reports assets across several voltage levels. The available national overview does not specify the equipment or voltage changes at any particular Indian substation, and practices can differ by utility.

Remote monitoring is also utility-specific. POWERGRID says its National Transmission Asset Management Centre (NTAMC) remotely monitors and controls its substations through central control, regional centres and a disaster-recovery centre. This is an example of POWERGRID’s arrangements, not a description of every substation in India.

Who operates and coordinates the grid?

Institution or network layer Geographic scope Main role
GRID-INDIA: NLDC and RLDCs National and regional System operation and coordination across the interconnected grid.
Regional Power Committees (RPCs) Regional Coordination among utilities on grid operation, planning, outages, protection, energy accounting and related matters.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) National System planning and technical, safety and grid standards.
Transmission utilities, including STUs Inter-state or state Own or operate transmission assets within their respective responsibilities; STUs have intra-state networks.

GRID-INDIA, NLDC and RLDCs

Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA) operates the all-India synchronous grid through the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) and five Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs). System operators work to keep generation and demand balanced and the interconnected system secure. The Ministry of Power describes balancing coordination at 15-minute intervals under CERC regulations; that interval does not mean operators take action only once every 15 minutes.

The Ministry of Power’s Annual Report 2024–25 says: “System operators ensure the power balance in the interconnected power system on a real time basis in a secure and reliable manner.” It also says GRID-INDIA facilitates inter-state transmission to utilities.

Regional Power Committees

RPCs coordinate regional grid-operation matters among utilities. The CEA lists responsibilities covering operational planning and outages, protection coordination, regional energy accounting, possible inter-state and inter-regional transfers, and certification matters. The CEA links these responsibilities to section 29(4) of the Electricity Act, 2003, describing their purpose as “concerning stability and smooth operation of the regional grids with economy and efficiency.”

Central Electricity Authority

The CEA advises on electricity-system planning and states that its functions include technical standards for electrical plants and lines, safety requirements, and grid standards for transmission-line operation and maintenance. It is a standards and planning authority, rather than the operator of the national grid.

Transmission utilities

Transmission utilities are responsible for transmission assets within their jurisdictions. The National Electricity Plan distinguishes the inter-state system from intra-state networks managed by STUs. POWERGRID is a major transmission licensee, but its company figures should not be read as totals for India’s entire grid.

Measure Reported figure Scope and date
Transmission lines 187,576 circuit-kilometres POWERGRID assets, as of 30 September 2026.
Substations 293 POWERGRID assets, as of 30 September 2026.
Transformation capacity 649,116 MVA POWERGRID assets, as of 30 September 2026.
System availability 99.81% POWERGRID reported figure, as of 30 September 2026.
Extra-high-voltage substations remotely monitored and controlled 296 POWERGRID NTAMC system, as of August 2026.

These measures answer different questions: circuit-kilometres count line length, MVA expresses transformation capacity, and availability is a reported system measure. They are not interchangeable, and none is a national total. The CEA’s Transmission Reports index displayed monthly completion reports through July 2026 when accessed on 7 October 2026; that reporting status is not itself a national inventory figure.

How the responsibilities fit together

The grid depends on distinct functions working together. Transmission utilities provide and manage physical network assets; GRID-INDIA operates and coordinates the interconnected system; RPCs support regional coordination among utilities; and the CEA handles planning, standards and safety functions. The National Electricity Plan sets out the broad network layers, while the Ministry’s GRID-INDIA chapter describes system operation.

For state-by-state details—such as the relevant State Load Despatch Centre, STU or distribution company—consult the official authority for that state. A national overview does not establish a complete current map of those organizations or consumer-level electricity routes.
