1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsI wanted regex review in VS Code to answer two different questions: “What does this pattern do?” and “Could matching it become dangerously slow?” A railroad diagram helps with the first. A ReDoS warning can help investigate the second—but neither a diagram nor a static warning proves that a pattern is exploitable. That distinction shaped the extension’s purpose: make regex structure easier to inspect and bring security review closer to the code, without treating a visual or automated flag as a verdict.
Why put regex diagrams and ReDoS review in the editor?
Regular expressions are compact, but their compactness can hide branching, repetition, and the interactions between them. When a pattern is embedded in source code, understanding it may mean mentally translating punctuation while also keeping the surrounding program in view. A railroad diagram offers another way to inspect the pattern: it represents the expression’s structure and possible paths visually.
That visualization is useful for comprehension, not a security guarantee. A diagram can make repeated or alternative paths easier to notice, but deciding whether those paths create a denial-of-service risk depends on how the expression behaves in its target engine and on the input that makes a match fail.
What a railroad diagram shows—and what it cannot tell you
Follow the structure, not just the punctuation
A railroad diagram lays out the structure of a regex as a visual path. It can make groups, alternatives, and repetition easier to trace than a dense expression in a line of code. A VS Code workflow can make that view useful at the point of editing: a separate Marketplace extension, Regex Railroad Diagrams, describes showing a diagram for the expression under the cursor and reporting parser errors for invalid syntax. Its listing also says that it supports only the most common regex features, a reminder that diagram tools have dialect and coverage limits.

A picture is not an exploitability test
Seeing multiple paths does not establish that a pattern is vulnerable. A pattern’s behavior depends on the full expression, the regex engine, and the input being matched. The USENIX Security Symposium’s 2021 study illustrates a vulnerable expression with a railroad diagram, but uses static analysis to find candidates and dynamic validation to investigate them. The paper says its static conditions are necessary, not necessarily sufficient. A diagram is therefore a way to inspect a pattern—not a substitute for security analysis.
What ReDoS means in practice
Regular expression denial of service, or ReDoS, occurs when matching a crafted input takes so long that it can impair a program or service. In a backtracking engine, a failed match may cause the engine to revisit earlier choices and try alternative paths. When repeated parts of an expression overlap or are ambiguous, the number of paths the engine may explore can grow rapidly, particularly for a near-match that ultimately fails.

OWASP’s ReDoS guidance gives examples including (a+)+$, ([a-zA-Z]+)*$, (a|aa)+$, and (a|a?)+$. These are warning shapes to review, not a rule that every nested quantifier is exploitable. As the OWASP Foundation’s JavaScript and TypeScript Security Cheat Sheet puts it: “Whether a pattern is actually exploitable depends on the surrounding expression and the failing input, not just the quantified group.”
How to interpret a ReDoS warning
Treat detection as triage
A static detector can identify structures that merit review. That is valuable in an editor because it can point a developer toward a suspicious expression while the surrounding code is visible. But a candidate finding and a confirmed vulnerability are different things. The USENIX study distinguishes exponential from polynomial worst-case behavior and dynamically validates patterns identified by its static method; that does not establish that every editor extension performs equivalent validation.

For a flagged pattern, check which engine actually executes it, what inputs reach it, and whether an attacker can supply a long or carefully chosen near-match. A warning is a reason to investigate those facts. It is not proof that an attacker can trigger a denial of service, and the absence of a warning is not proof that the pattern is safe.
Test in the target runtime
When investigating a suspicious pattern, test valid inputs, invalid inputs, and near-matches that fail late. Do so in the runtime and regex flavor used by the application: syntax and matching behavior are not interchangeable across languages or engines. OWASP’s input-validation guidance advises testing these input classes and considering a non-backtracking engine or a timeout where available.

Designing the extension around two distinct jobs
The extension’s premise was to put structural understanding and security review in one VS Code workflow. They complement each other, but they answer different questions: the diagram helps a person reason about what the expression accepts; a ReDoS check points to a possible performance hazard that needs context and, where appropriate, runtime testing.
Keeping those jobs distinct matters for the interface as much as for the analysis. A visual explanation should not be presented as a safety result, and a warning should not imply confirmed exploitability unless the tool has actually validated the relevant behavior. The evidence available for this article does not establish implementation details such as the extension’s parser, analysis algorithm, supported dialects, runtime validation, or measured detection accuracy, so I do not attribute those specifics to the project.

Choosing a VS Code regex tool
Marketplace listings show that extensions in this category take different approaches. Regex Railroad Diagrams describes a diagram for the expression under the cursor, with parser errors for invalid syntax. Regex Radar describes workspace discovery, diagnostics for suspicious expressions, incremental analysis, and a client extension that communicates with a language server. Those are distinct workflows: inspecting a selected pattern is not the same as discovering patterns across a workspace. The listings describe their respective products; they do not establish the architecture or capabilities of the extension discussed here.
A current Marketplace listing for Ghost Regex advertises a broader set of features, including diagrams, AST explanations, ReDoS detection, tests, and previews against real files. It may be useful as an example of how the category is evolving, but the available information does not establish that Ghost Regex is this project. The listing says its free tier includes JavaScript and Python dialects, while Go, Rust, Java, and PCRE are among the Pro dialects. It currently lists Pro at “$6/month.” Those are listing claims, not independently tested results; plan contents, price, and compatibility can change.
The Ghost Regex listing also says the extension runs locally without server requests, telemetry, or accounts. That is the vendor’s stated privacy position, not an independent audit. Check the current Marketplace listing for the product’s own terms and details rather than generalizing that claim to other extensions.
Reducing ReDoS risk beyond the editor
An editor warning is one part of prevention. OWASP’s JavaScript and TypeScript guidance recommends keeping patterns linear where possible, avoiding nested quantifiers and ambiguous alternatives over the same characters, limiting untrusted input length, and using well-tested validators for common fields such as email addresses and URLs. Where the runtime supports it, a non-backtracking engine or a timeout can provide another layer of protection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Simplify ambiguous repetition: Review nested repetition and alternatives that can consume the same characters along multiple paths.
- Constrain input: Enforce an appropriate maximum length before matching untrusted input.
- Test realistic failures: Include near-matches that fail late, not only short valid examples.
- Match the production engine: Verify behavior in the actual runtime and regex dialect used by the application.
- Use a suitable alternative: For common validation tasks, prefer a well-tested validator where appropriate; consider engine timeouts or non-backtracking behavior if supported.
These measures address the underlying risk. A diagram can make a pattern easier to reason about, and a detector can help surface candidates, but the final assessment belongs to the pattern’s real execution context.
