Hurricane Helene temporarily shut down both U.S. high-purity quartz operations in Spruce Pine, North Carolina—a region that supplies much of the quartz used in semiconductor and other technology manufacturing. The disruption exposed a less visible link in the chip supply chain: quartz is used to make crucibles for melting polysilicon, an early step before silicon is turned into wafers. The evidence documents a shutdown and a reported restart in October 2024, but does not establish current capacity or a resulting global chip shortage.
Why a North Carolina quartz area matters to chipmaking
Spruce Pine is not where semiconductor chips are manufactured. Its importance is upstream: the area’s high-purity quartz is used to make fused-quartz crucibles, which hold silicon as it is melted and formed into ingots. Those ingots are later processed into wafers for semiconductor and photovoltaic markets, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2025 Mineral Commodity Summaries.
North Carolina’s state damage assessment says the local operations supply most of the world’s high-purity quartz for semiconductors and other technologies. The material also has uses in solar panels and fiber-optic cables, as reported by the Associated Press. That makes Spruce Pine a consequential source, but it does not mean every chip depends on a single mine or facility.
How Helene interrupted the supply chain
Helene temporarily shut down both U.S. high-purity quartz companies, the USGS reported. The hurricane’s effects extended beyond damage at a site: washed-out roads and prolonged outages of electricity, water, sewer, and communications cut businesses in western North Carolina off from workers and customers, according to the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management assessment.

Those conditions matter because extraction and processing are only part of the chain. Facilities need working utilities and access for employees, supplies, and shipments. Even when a production site can restart, damaged transport links can delay deliveries.
What was reported about the restart
In an October 10, 2024 report, the Associated Press said Sibelco had restarted production and shipments, with both progressively ramping up toward full capacity. AP reported that The Quartz Corp’s restart depended on rebuilding local infrastructure. These are dated updates, not confirmation of either company’s operating capacity today.

AP quoted Sibelco CEO Hilmar Rode: “While the road to full recovery for our communities will be long, restarting our operations and resuming shipments to customers are important contributors to rebuilding the local economy.”
What the disruption does—and does not—show about chips
AP attributed to author Vince Beiser an estimate that 70%–90% of crucibles used worldwide to melt polysilicon for chips are made from Spruce Pine quartz. That figure refers to crucibles, not the share of chips made there, and it is Beiser’s estimate as reported by AP—not a USGS production statistic.

The sources establish a temporary shutdown and a later reported restart. They do not establish 2026 operating capacity, how much inventory manufacturers had on hand, the capacity of alternative suppliers, or whether Helene caused a chip shortage. Without those details, it is not possible to quantify how long downstream manufacturers could withstand an interruption or to conclude that a shortage did—or did not—occur.
