Heat can make it harder to concentrate, sleep well, and regulate your mood. Those effects are real concerns, but scientists have not settled on one mechanism that explains them. The best current picture is that heat strains several body systems at once, while sleep loss, stress, behavior changes, and social conditions may add to the effects.

Why can hot weather make it harder to think?

Your brain depends on the body maintaining a stable internal environment. During hot weather, the body works to shed heat, and that effort can coincide with fatigue, discomfort, poorer sleep, and difficulty focusing. The effects vary from person to person; population-level findings do not predict exactly how any one individual will respond.

Heat is therefore better understood as a whole-body stressor than as a single “brain switch.” Researchers are investigating overlapping physiological, psychological, behavioral, and social pathways rather than one proven cause.

What might connect heat to cognition and mental health?

Physiological strain

When the body is challenged by heat, temperature regulation, circulation, and hydration all matter. A 2026 narrative review maps possible links involving autonomic and cardiovascular strain, hydration, stress responses, and other biological processes. It also discusses neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, blood–brain barrier disruption, and neurotransmitter changes. These are proposed pathways with different levels of evidence—not a settled explanation for the full range of mental or cognitive effects.

Sleep disruption and hot nights

Heat can make sleep more difficult, and disrupted sleep can leave people tired and less able to concentrate or manage emotions. Hot nights may add to the body’s cumulative heat burden. Sleep disruption is a plausible contributor, but current evidence does not establish it as the sole or universal cause of heat-related mental-health effects.

Stress, behavior, and social contact

Heat may bring psychological stress, fatigue, reduced exercise, less access to usual coping strategies, or social isolation. Work disruption and pressure on health services can add broader strains. These candidate pathways emerged in research with both published studies and people with lived experience, but their relative importance is not yet clear.

Why are scientists still working out the mechanisms?

A 2025 mixed-method systematic review identified 241 records but found only four studies eligible for its review of empirical mechanisms. Those studies offered limited evidence involving stress-system activation, psychological stress, reduced exercise, and sleep disruption. Focus groups with 33 participants—people with lived experience and health professionals—also highlighted fatigue, health anxiety, reduced access to coping strategies, and social isolation as possible pathways.

The review authors concluded: “There is a dearth of reliable data on the mechanisms underpinning the impacts of extreme heat on mental health.” In other words, there are credible leads, but too few direct studies to say precisely how the pathways interact or which ones matter most in different people and circumstances.

What does the brain-imaging research show?

A 2025 Environmental Research study analyzed cross-sectional and prospective UK Biobank data from 41,552 participants. It reported associations between chronic high-temperature exposure, brain-structure measures, and mental health, including a mediation analysis involving global grey-matter volume.

For this study, chronic exposure meant the percentage of days with maximum temperatures above 27 °C over the prior 20 years, estimated using residential histories and gridded reanalysis temperatures. That is the study’s operational definition, not a universal threshold for brain harm. The observational results do not prove that heat caused changes in brain structure or mental illness.

Who may face greater risk during extreme heat?

Heat exposure and vulnerability are not evenly distributed. Health conditions, age, occupation, housing, socioeconomic circumstances, and access to cooling can shape both exposure and risk. The World Health Organization notes that hot days and nights can create cumulative body stress and that heat can exacerbate underlying illnesses, including mental-health conditions.

People with existing mental-health conditions may face additional challenges. UK guidance for England notes that some psychiatric medicines can affect temperature regulation, while cognitive difficulties can make heat-stress symptoms harder to recognize. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also identifies people with mental illness as especially susceptible, with dementia and severe mental illness among its concerns. These are reasons to plan with a clinician—not to stop or change prescribed medication without medical advice.

What can you do during a heat wave?

  • Follow current heat-health advice from local public-health authorities, since recommendations depend on location and conditions.
  • Reduce heat exposure where practical and use a cooler indoor space; a fan or air conditioner may help cool a room, but no particular device is established here as a treatment for brain or mental-health effects.
  • Pay attention to changes in sleep, concentration, mood, or usual functioning during hot weather, especially if you or someone you support has an existing health condition.
  • Ask a clinician or pharmacist how heat may interact with a prescribed medicine. Do not alter or stop medication on your own.

The CDC’s Clinical Guidance for Heat Health provides resources for clinicians on heat-risk screening and medication considerations. WHO’s Heat and health fact sheet explains how risk depends on factors including heat intensity and duration, acclimatization, adaptation, and infrastructure.
