China’s Tiangong space station uses Hall electric thrusters on its Tianhe core module to help maintain its orbit. They use xenon and supplement—not replace—the station’s chemical propulsion. They do not generate the station’s electrical power. “Ion thrusters” is a familiar shorthand, but Hall thrusters is the more precise name for the system described in the technical overview.
What propulsion system does Tiangong use?
Tiangong has a T-shaped configuration: Tianhe is the core module, with the Wentian and Mengtian experiment modules attached at its sides. The China National Space Administration identifies a Hall electric propulsion system among the station’s control and propulsion technologies. China Manned Space describes Tiangong as a long-duration crewed research platform for astronaut life and work, as well as scientific and technical experiments.
The 2023 technical overview describes Tianhe’s system as four 80 mN Hall thrusters, two gas-storage modules, and xenon as the working medium. It gives the system a medium-power range of 0.5 to 10 kW. These are specifications reported in that overview, not a statement about the thrusters’ current operating state.

How do the thrusters help keep the station in orbit?
A space station needs periodic orbital maintenance. Tiangong’s Hall system provides electric propulsion to assist with that task, while chemical propulsion remains part of the station’s propulsion capability. The headline phrase “powered by” therefore means that electric thrusters help with orbital maintenance; it does not mean the station relies on them exclusively or that they supply its electricity.

The overview also estimates chemical-propellant savings of not less than 800 kg per year. These are reported design figures and operating cases; they should not be read as independently verified current telemetry, a guarantee for every operating condition, or proof that the system is currently running continuously.

What is distinctive about the system?
The overview’s authors, specialists from the Beijing Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering at the China Academy of Space Technology, describe using electric propulsion to assist a space station’s orbit maintenance as a first. That is the authors’ claim in their 2023 technical article, rather than an independently adjudicated finding about global priority.

The figures explain the expected benefit of adding electric propulsion to station-keeping: the overview reports a smaller altitude decrease in its continuous-operation case than in its out-of-operation case, alongside an annual chemical-propellant-saving estimate. The cited material does not establish whether Tiangong’s thrusters are operating continuously now or confirm actual current savings.
