Gravitational-wave detectors reveal events such as neutron-star mergers through tiny disturbances in spacetime. X-ray space telescopes look for high-energy photons from the same event and its aftermath. Together, the observations connect a merger to its electromagnetic effects and show how those effects change over time; neither messenger can replace the other.
What each kind of observatory tells us
Gravitational-wave detectors identify the merger
Gravitational waves are disturbances in spacetime produced by energetic events, including mergers of compact objects. A detector such as LIGO can register a merger and provide information about the event. Its signal is not an image of the explosion or a measurement of light: it is a distinct kind of evidence about the source.
X-ray telescopes observe high-energy light
X-ray observatories measure photons from the event’s surroundings and aftermath. By targeting the region associated with a gravitational-wave detection, they can test whether the source also produces X-ray emission and monitor how that emission evolves. The gravitational-wave localization guides follow-up; the X-ray telescope then measures photons from a sky position.
GW170817 showed why the signals belong together
The 2017 merger GW170817 was the first binary neutron-star merger detected in gravitational waves with a confirmed electromagnetic counterpart. Its follow-up unfolded across different messengers and timescales, rather than arriving as one simultaneous observation.

| Observation | Timing in the GW170817 sequence | What it contributed |
|---|---|---|
| LIGO gravitational-wave detection | 2017-08-17 | Established the neutron-star merger as the event for follow-up. NASA’s Chandra account |
| Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor gamma-ray pulse | Two seconds after the gravitational-wave detection | Provided a prompt high-energy electromagnetic signal. NASA’s Chandra account |
| Chandra X-ray detection | Nine days after the merger | Detected the jet afterglow as the jet spread into our line of sight. NASA’s task-force summary |
| XMM-Newton X-ray observation | 2017-12-29, 137 days after the event | Observed the X-ray counterpart when its emission reached a peak. ESA’s XMM-Newton record |
The nine-day and 137-day intervals describe observations of GW170817, not a universal delay for X-ray emission after a merger. The chronology illustrates how different facilities can contribute at different stages: a prompt signal can identify high-energy activity, while later X-ray observations reveal and track an afterglow. NASA describes follow-up ranging from simultaneous wide-field monitoring to dedicated observations hours or months after an event. NASA’s multimessenger overview
What the X-rays added to the merger story
Chandra’s detection connected the gravitational-wave source to X-ray emission from its aftermath. NASA’s account associates that afterglow with a jet directed toward Earth after it spread into view. X-ray observations therefore helped researchers investigate the high-energy outflow and its evolving emission, rather than merely confirming that another signal existed.

The distinction matters: gravitational-wave data characterize the merger through spacetime signals, while X-ray measurements reveal emission from material and outflows around the source. Combining them builds a fuller account of the event and its consequences. As NASA’s Chandra account quotes team lead Eleonora Troja, the detection made it possible to link the gravitational-wave source with other areas of astrophysics, including neutron-star mergers.
Why coordinated follow-up takes more than one telescope
A gravitational-wave alert gives other observatories a reason to search, but successful follow-up depends on facilities with different sky coverage, response times, and energy ranges. Some observations can monitor broad regions or catch early emission; targeted X-ray pointings can study a selected location and follow its changes.

What this complementarity does—and does not—mean
- Different messengers: gravitational waves and X-rays carry distinct evidence from the same astrophysical event.
- Different time windows: one observatory may register a merger first, while electromagnetic facilities detect prompt or later emission.
- More complete interpretation: linking the merger signal to an evolving X-ray afterglow helps connect the event to its high-energy environment.
- No guaranteed counterpart: GW170817 demonstrates what coordinated observations can reveal; it does not establish that every merger produces a detectable X-ray counterpart or a jet observable from Earth.
The practical result is a division of labor: gravitational-wave observatories identify and characterize spacetime events, and X-ray telescopes investigate high-energy light from their aftermath. In a successful joint observation, the two measurements turn a detection into a richer physical account.
