GPS navigation apps reroute by matching your location to a digital road map, using reports and traffic data to identify disrupted roads, then recalculating a path if a segment is treated as blocked. The exact inputs and whether you must accept the new route vary by app; a warning shown on the map does not always mean the road has been removed from routing.

How an app knows where you are and what is ahead

Your phone estimates its position using GPS. The navigation app matches that position to a road represented in its digital map, which lets it identify your current route and the segments ahead. GPS provides the position; the map provides the road network the app uses to guide you.

While drivers use a service, their movement can also help describe traffic on mapped roads. Waze says it uses information from drivers with the app open to calculate average speeds and improve road and turn information. Its traffic-feed documentation describes comparing current average speed with free-flow speed and, for unusual traffic, considering historical averages in roughly 30-minute time slots. Waze Help and Waze traffic-feed specifications explain these Waze-specific inputs.

Google says Maps considers historical traffic patterns, live conditions and driver reports, including reports of road or lane closures, construction, disabled vehicles and objects in the road. These inputs can help the app estimate delays or identify a disruption, but slow traffic alone does not establish that a road is closed. Google’s explanation of how Maps predicts traffic and determines routes describes those factors.

Where closure information comes from

A closure may be reported by a driver or provided through a transportation partner’s data feed. Waze supports partner feeds for real-time and planned closures through its Closure and Incident Feed Specification (CIFS). Its documentation says planned closures can be scheduled to appear in the app during their actual time window. Feed formats, map matching and access depend on the partner integration; this does not mean every road authority can submit a closure directly without one.

A missing or delayed authority feed can leave a service without advance closure information. That follows from the role of partner feeds; it is not a published or quantified failure rate.

A map alert is not always a routing restriction

Showing an incident and treating a road as impassable are different actions. Waze’s partner documentation states that ordinary incidents inform drivers but do not affect routing, while road closures do affect routing. Its CIFS documentation also distinguishes closure events from other event types that may appear on the map or trigger a notification without directly changing a route. This is Waze’s documented behavior, not a rule that applies to every navigation app.

Reports may be mistaken or become stale. Waze describes reliability scores and user reactions such as “Thumbs up” and “Not there”; it also describes removing alerts after an event’s end time or after multiple “Not there” reactions. Those are Waze features, not evidence that other apps use the same validation process. Waze Partners Help describes the distinction and these report-handling mechanisms.

How the app recalculates and guides you

When the service treats a route segment as closed or disrupted, it can search for another path through its road network and update navigation. Google says Maps can automatically reroute using nearby road conditions and incidents. That does not mean every route change is automatic: behavior can depend on the app, settings, device and navigation mode.

Google’s Navigation SDK documentation gives a more specific example: after a road closure is reported, the app may show an alternate route around the blocked segment and ask the user to confirm or deny the reroute. This describes that SDK flow, not every Google Maps screen or every navigation service. See Google Navigation SDK real-time disruptions.

What can make a reroute late or unreliable

  • Reports can be wrong or old. A community report may not reflect current conditions; Waze describes user feedback and alert removal, but no universal validation method is established for all apps.
  • Connectivity affects fresh data. Waze says it expects an active network connection and that users cannot locate or navigate a route without one; intermittent service can make real-time traffic information unreliable. Other apps may behave differently. See Waze Help.
  • Congestion can prompt a route change without a closure. Google describes using live conditions and historical patterns in route decisions, so a reroute may be an attempt to avoid predicted traffic rather than evidence that a road is blocked.
  • The algorithm and timing are not fully public. The cited providers describe selected inputs and behaviors, but do not publish a complete route-scoring formula, confidence threshold or guaranteed delay between a report and a reroute.
