GPS collars let researchers follow an animal’s location over time without having to observe every movement directly. They can reveal travel routes, habitat use and other patterns, but no collaring method is guaranteed to be disturbance-free: capture, handling and the device itself can affect an animal. Responsible studies aim to minimize those effects through careful study design, species-appropriate equipment, expert fitting and monitoring.

How a GPS collar tracks an animal

A wildlife tracking package typically combines a GPS receiver, power supply, antenna and protective casing with an attachment suited to the species. That attachment might be a collar, harness, glue mount or another design. The GPS receiver records satellite-derived positions at scheduled intervals; the equipment may store those fixes for retrieval later or transmit them periodically, including by satellite.

The result is a sequence of locations rather than continuous observation. Researchers analyze the sequence to study movement, space use and habitat selection. A location alone does not explain why an animal moved, so interpretation depends on the study question and may require habitat data, field observations or other evidence. The sampling schedule, battery capacity and device design shape how much data can be collected and for how long.

What researchers learn from location data

Telemetry is useful when animals are elusive or their movements span areas that are difficult to watch directly. Researchers can investigate where animals travel, which areas and resources they use, dispersal, and questions relevant to management and conservation. Tracking may also contribute to research on habitat requirements, thermoregulation, life history and demographics, though location fixes alone do not establish all of those answers.

At Yellowstone, wolf researchers combine collar data with observations to investigate questions beyond where an animal went. California’s wildlife agency describes GPS collars that transmit locations by satellite and can be programmed to drop off once enough data have been gathered and sent. These examples show that a collar is part of a broader research plan, not a self-explanatory record of behavior.

Why collaring can still disturb wildlife

Getting a device onto an animal often requires capture and handling; some animals are chemically immobilized. Those procedures can cause stress, injury or, in rare cases, death. After release, an unsuitable or poorly fitted device can abrade or ulcerate skin. A loose collar may snag or trap a limb or mouth, while one that is too tight can constrict. Growing juveniles need room for development, and a collar may be unsuitable for some species or stages of life.

Weight also needs context. A light device by itself does not prove that the animal will be unaffected: movement, speed, attachment, behavior and habitat can all matter. Snow leopard telemetry guidance discusses a reported example in which a collar equal to 3% of a cheetah’s body mass could, at high speed, exert forces equivalent to 54% of body weight. That example draws on earlier work and should not be treated as a general effect for other species or collar designs.

How researchers reduce risks

Minimizing disturbance starts before capture. Researchers should define a clear question and explain why telemetry is needed instead of, or in addition to, less intrusive alternatives. They also need to consider whether the expected information justifies the handling and deployment burden. Permits, ethics review and veterinary support may apply; requirements differ by jurisdiction. NSW Department of Primary Industries guidance says tracking devices should be used only by people with extensive expertise.

Choose equipment for the animal and study

  • Select the lightest practical device and, where possible, a design previously suited to the same or a similar species.
  • Match the attachment to the animal’s size, body shape, behavior and habitat. Swimming, entering dens and moving through dense vegetation can change what constitutes a safe fit.
  • Balance the desired location frequency and study duration against device mass, power needs and transmission schedule. The available evidence does not establish one universally best collar.

NSW guidance gives less than 5% of body mass as an ideal general guide for total transmitter weight, and specifically states less than 5% for transmitters placed on birds. It also notes that a larger mass may be proposed in some cases. This is screening guidance—not proof of harmlessness or a universal legal limit.

Fit, monitor and plan for removal

  • Fit the attachment so it neither constricts the animal nor slips into a hazardous position. Account for growth, normal grooming, abrasion and possible entanglement.
  • Set a plan to monitor for problems and respond if one occurs. For juveniles, allow for growth rather than treating the initial fit as permanent.
  • Use a programmable drop-off, breakaway design or other suitable removal plan so the device does not remain attached indefinitely.

Protect sensitive location data

Precise wildlife locations can create risks beyond the animal wearing the device. Snow leopard guidance warns that public access to locations may facilitate poaching or disturb animals through tourism. Access should therefore be limited to people who need the data, with public reporting handled carefully.

What evidence says about collar effects

A 2024 U.S. Geological Survey study followed 105 horses and 60 burros across five western U.S. populations over four years. For the modern collar designs and populations studied, it reported no survival difference between collared and uncollared adult females—mares and jennies—or between their foals. That is useful evidence for those animals and conditions, not proof that every collar is harmless or that there were no effects other than survival.

The Yellowstone Wolf Project provides a separate example of individual fitting: personnel account for each wolf’s size, sex and age, taking special care with growing young animals. Its report describes collars weighing about 500 grams, or 0.8–1.8% of wolf body mass. Those figures describe that program’s example, not a universal wildlife-collar specification.

How researchers choose a tracking system

There is no single best configuration for every study. Researchers weigh the information needed against the animal, landscape and practical limits of the equipment.

Decision What researchers consider
Location detail How frequent and fine-scale the fixes need to be to answer the study question.
Data transfer Whether data can be stored for later retrieval or transmitted on a schedule, and whether the transmission link will work in the study area.
Species and attachment Body size and shape, growth, behavior, habitat, and risks such as snagging or abrasion.
Mass, power and duration The trade-off among device size, battery capacity, transmission schedule and time in the field.
Animal welfare and logistics Capture and handling burden, monitoring, drop-off or removal, data security, permissions and cost.

Published guidance identifies these as relevant design factors, but it does not establish a controlled, universal ranking of current systems by accuracy, price or battery life. Specific performance depends on the device, configuration and field conditions.
