Google Photos’ Photo remix uses AI templates to transform a backed-up photo into a new creation you can save or share. On Android, look for it in the app’s Create area; access depends on your account, age, location, and the feature’s availability on your device.
What Photo remix does
Photo remix is a template-based creation tool in Google Photos. You choose a photo and a style, then Google Photos generates a reimagined version. Google Photos Help describes it this way: “It simplifies the creative process through AI templates to help you reimagine your photos into unique, shareable creations with just one tap.”
It is one of several tools in the Create area, alongside options such as Photo to video, Video remix, cinematic photos, collages, animations, and highlight videos. Those tools make different kinds of creations: Photo remix applies a template to a photo, while Photo to video turns a still image into a short clip and Video remix edits a video.

- A backed-up photo: Google says the photo must be backed up.
- An internet connection: Photo remix requires a network connection.
- An eligible account and age: Google’s Android guidance requires a personal Google Account; Workspace and school accounts are not eligible. Although the general age guidance for these features starts at 13, Photo remix is restricted to people 18 and older.
- Availability in your location and app: Google says some features are unavailable in some regions, and availability or functionality can vary by location and platform. The steps below are for Android; other platforms may differ.
Google also limits the number of photo and video generations users can make per day. It says a Google AI plan increases that allowance, but does not establish a universal quota in the cited help guidance. A plan is not listed as a requirement to use Photo remix.

How to use Photo remix on Android
- Open the Google Photos app and tap Create.
- Find Remix your photos or Photo remix. The label or placement may differ as the app changes; if you do not see it, check the current Create area.
- Browse the featured templates or view and filter the available options, then select a template.
- Follow the prompts to choose a photo or, for some personalized templates, use the offered option based on insights from your life. Google says some personalized templates do not require an image upload.
- Wait for Google Photos to generate the creation. On the result screen, choose the available option to save or share it.
What to expect from the generated image
Photo remix generates a new interpretation, not necessarily a faithful edit of the source photo. Google warns that generative AI creations may be unexpected or inaccurate, so people, objects, and other details may not match the original exactly.
In an August 12, 2025 Google Photos Community post, Google employee and Community Manager Rebecca V. described Remix as experimental and suggested that a well-lit, focused, front-facing portrait of one or a few subjects may produce better results. Treat that as Google’s guidance, not a guarantee of a particular result.
