Google’s Noto 3D Emoji began as familiar 2D drawings and became hand-shaped 3D models. The goal was not to make tiny photorealistic objects, but to keep emoji expressive and easy to recognize on a screen. Google says the team used research, repeated design decisions and contrast checks to decide what to add, simplify or change.
Why Google moved emoji into 3D
When Google announced the collection on May 12, 2026, Creative Director Jennifer Daniel described the change as a way to make online expression feel more physical and emotionally present. The redesign also reflects how people use emoji to add nuance and subtext to short digital messages. In a July 17, 2026 explainer, Google characterized Noto as a collection of 3,977 characters; that figure is Google’s count, not an independently verified tally. Google’s July explainer traces the change from the blob style associated with its emoji in the 2010s to the Noto 3D approach.
Dimension was a means, not the design goal. Google’s stated priority was expressive clarity: emoji should remain illustrative and recognizable rather than become miniature anatomical studies.

The team says it started with 2D drawings, then drew, sculpted and debated the characters by hand as it built true 3D models. That process let designers add volume while retaining the personality of the original illustrations, rather than simply converting flat images into objects. Google Design’s account of the process describes how this approach affected the characters’ bodies, faces and details.

Illustration over anatomical realism
Google Design uses a kangaroo to explain the trade-off. A more literal anatomical treatment might feel intimidating; an illustrative one could stay playful. The article attributes to UX Engineer Dr. Alexander Robertson research suggesting that highly anatomical facial details, such as irises or nostril depth, can slow the processing of emotion. The account does not state the study’s methods or sample size, so this should be understood as Google’s description of its research, not a universal finding about how everyone reads faces.
Complete silhouettes, not just familiar faces
Three-dimensional modeling exposed what flat drawings could hide. Google Design recounts that the earlier poodle illustration concealed a fourth leg, which became visible when the team sculpted it. The team also changed the raccoon from a floating head into a full-body animal. Google says its research supported complete animal silhouettes because posture and stance can help communicate intent.

How the team kept small emoji readable
A detailed model can lose clarity when reduced to an emoji-sized image. Google Design says the team tested models at 18×18 pixels and found that textures and props could become visual noise. Its rule was to keep each emoji to no more than three essential identifying details. In the volcano example, the mountain and molten lava flow carried the idea; other details were removed.

Google also reports user studies finding that people preferred full-body animals to floating heads, that props could hurt comprehension, and that small changes in a wink’s direction could change its perceived meaning. The company’s published accounts do not provide the studies’ sample sizes, dates or methods, so the findings explain the team’s reported design rationale but cannot be assessed in detail from those accounts.

How contrast and skin-tone appearance were balanced
Google identified a specific legibility issue: some emoji with darker skin tones could be difficult to see against dark chat backgrounds. The team built an AI-powered tool to analyze emoji pixels, flag low contrast and suggest possible improvements. Google Design says the audit also examined image edges against common backgrounds.
The tool identified problems; designers chose how to address them. They added subtle rim lighting and contour highlights by hand instead of applying a broad filter that could wash out skin tones. As program manager Wilder Wells put it, “While our algorithm flagged the failures, it didn’t solve them.” Google’s design account sums up the concern: “Nobody should have to choose between using their actual skin tone and having their messages be legible.”

What Google says about files and rollout
Google describes the Noto portfolio as open source and says raw .OBJ files can support community projects such as VR worlds, apps and memes. Google Design points readers to the Noto GitHub page and the complete Noto 3D collection. These are downloadable digital assets, distinct from whether a particular phone or app has begun displaying the emoji.

In May 2026, Google said Noto 3D would start on Pixel phones later that year. The July Google Design article described a rollout across Google and Android, beginning with Pixel and followed over time by Google apps and select partner devices. Those statements do not establish the exact availability on every device as of October 7, 2026. A July 18, 2026 GitHub issue asking where the announced .OBJ files could be found records a community member’s question; by itself, it does not show whether the files were or were not available.
