During geopolitical tensions, monitor energy and commodity prices, inflation expectations, bond yields and credit spreads, equities and volatility, trade and shipping conditions, currencies and reserves, and policy risk. No single indicator tells the whole story: the economic impact depends on how long and how widely a shock disrupts supply, trade, infrastructure, and financing—and on each country’s ability to absorb it.
How geopolitical tensions reach markets
A conflict or trade dispute can affect markets through several connected channels. Disrupted energy or commodity supply can raise the cost of fuel, transport, electricity, fertilizer, food, and other inputs. Shipping reroutes, delays, higher freight charges, and insurance costs can then spread the shock to firms and consumers far from the conflict zone.
If higher energy or food costs persist, headline inflation can rise and feed into transport, manufactured goods, and services. Inflation expectations matter too: if households and businesses expect prices to keep rising, those beliefs can influence wage and pricing decisions. At the same time, uncertainty can alter borrowing costs, currencies, investment, and asset prices. Yields, credit spreads, equities, and volatility may all move, but not in the same direction after every geopolitical event.
The IMF’s April 2026 World Economic Outlook said the Middle East war challenged global growth and disinflation. Its March 2026 analysis described impacts on energy, fertilizer, food, trade, and finance, including higher logistics costs when ships reroute. The duration and reach of a shock, and any damage to infrastructure or supply chains, shape whether these effects fade quickly or persist.

Economic indicators to watch
Energy and commodity prices
Follow oil, natural gas, and other relevant commodity prices alongside reports of supply disruption and the status of key transport routes and infrastructure. A headline oil price is only part of the picture: a disruption can also affect fertilizer, food, shipping, or electricity inputs. For import-dependent economies and businesses, the cost and availability of supplies can matter as much as the benchmark price.
Inflation and expectations
Compare headline inflation with core inflation and with measures of market, household, and business inflation expectations. A short-lived rise in fuel prices is different from a persistent increase that spreads to transport, goods, and services. Expectations are worth watching because they can influence wage negotiations and companies’ pricing decisions.

Yields, credit spreads, equities, and volatility
Government bond yields show how borrowing costs and market expectations are changing. Credit spreads—the extra yield investors demand to hold riskier debt instead of government bonds—can help reveal whether financing conditions are tightening. Equity prices and volatility provide another view of risk appetite and uncertainty. Interpret them together: geopolitical shocks do not produce a uniform, predictable move in every asset.
Trade, shipping, and supply chains
Look for evidence of trade-policy uncertainty, shipping delays or rerouting, freight and insurance costs, and supply-chain pressure. These measures can reveal disruption before it appears in consumer prices or national economic data. The IMF’s 2026 annual report said global trade volumes rose nearly 5 percent in 2025, while trade growth was expected to slow in 2026 amid the Middle East war shock.

Currencies, reserves, and national buffers
Exchange rates, foreign-exchange reserves, import bills, current-account positions, and fiscal capacity help show how well a country can manage more expensive imports or interrupted exports. A country with limited reserves or little room to support households and businesses may have fewer ways to cushion the shock. Market depth and access to financing also affect how easily a country can absorb pressure.
Geopolitical and policy-risk measures
Risk indexes can organize information about geopolitical events, defence, trade policy, economic policy uncertainty, market volatility, and related risks. They are evidence to interpret, not direct readings of economic damage or universal forecasts. The European Central Bank’s composite is a monthly, euro-area-focused indicator built from 12 measures covering defence, trade, and capital and finance; it is not a definitive global gauge.

Why the same shock affects countries differently
Exposure depends on more than whether a country is near a conflict. Compare countries across these factors:
- Energy import dependence and energy mix: reliance on imported fuel can increase exposure to supply and price shocks, while the mix of energy sources affects which inputs matter most.
- Ability to maintain exports: a country may be affected differently depending on whether its own production and export routes remain available.
- Trade and shipping links: reliance on affected routes or imported inputs can transmit disruption through delivery delays and higher logistics costs.
- Fiscal space and foreign-exchange reserves: larger buffers can give governments more room to respond to higher import bills or economic stress.
- Market depth and financing access: countries with limited access to financing may find it harder to manage volatility and support activity.
The IMF’s March 2026 analysis identifies energy importers, poorer economies, and countries with limited fiscal or external buffers as particularly exposed. This is a comparison framework, not a ranking that predicts the outcome for every country.

How to read forecasts without mistaking them for live data
Forecasts are conditional estimates, not current market readings. In its July 8, 2026 briefing, the IMF projected global growth of 3.0 percent in 2026 and 3.4 percent in 2027, and global headline inflation of 4.7 percent in 2026. The briefing characterized the growth baseline as a V-shaped recovery and said disinflation since early 2024 had stalled, while the core inflation forecast was broadly unchanged.
The same IMF briefing used an implied average oil price of $89 per barrel for 2026. That figure was a forecast assumption based on market pricing as of June 10, 2026—not a live spot price. Its baseline also assumed that the Strait of Hormuz would begin reopening in mid-July 2026 and that conditions would normalize by March 2027. Those were assumptions underlying the projections, not confirmed outcomes. A longer or broader conflict, deeper fragmentation, or renewed trade tensions could produce a different path.
What the ECB’s risk index can—and cannot—tell you
The ECB reported that its euro-area geoeconomic composite reached an all-time high in March 2026. In the ECB’s model, a one-standard-deviation shock to the composite was associated with increased downside risks to GDP over six quarters and with financial stress. That is a modeled relationship, not proof that the index itself caused those outcomes or a precise forecast for every market or country.
Use a composite as a way to track several forms of risk together, then check it against observable outcomes: commodity prices, shipping conditions, inflation, yields, spreads, currencies, and economic data. The index’s euro-area scope and modeled results should not be generalized into a universal market prediction.
Quick Recap
A practical monitoring routine
- Identify the affected supply routes and inputs. Check whether the event threatens energy, food, fertilizer, shipping, or other inputs that matter to the country or industry you are assessing.
- Check prices and physical disruption together. Compare commodity prices with reports of supply interruptions, rerouting, delivery delays, and freight or insurance costs.
- Look for pass-through into inflation. Track headline and core inflation as well as household, business, and market expectations to distinguish an initial price jump from broader persistence.
- Assess financing and market stress. Review government yields, credit spreads, equity performance, and volatility rather than relying on a single asset move.
- Compare countries’ capacity to absorb the shock. Consider energy dependence, export continuity, trade links, fiscal room, reserves, and financing access.
- Separate observations from scenarios. Date forecasts and note their assumptions; do not treat a projection or risk index as a live price or guaranteed outcome.
