Nick Bild’s Commodore 64 project does not train or run a modern image-generation model on the vintage computer. A modern computer prepares a small probabilistic principal component analysis (PCA) model; the C64 uses simplified BASIC code and those prepared parameters to generate tiny, 8×8 retro-style sprites. Bild reports that 94 iterations took about 20 minutes on his C64.

What the Commodore 64 actually does

The work is split between two computers. Bild prepared the model on a modern computer, then adapted the generation code so it could run in BASIC on the Commodore 64. The C64 uses the prepared information to create new sprite patterns; it does not train a modern neural network from scratch or run Stable Diffusion.

The project uses probabilistic PCA, a statistical method Bild adapted for the narrow task of generating 8×8 images. He chose it because contemporary image-generation algorithms were not practical for the target hardware. His stated aim was to make sprites that could inspire game design, not to produce finished commercial artwork. Bild’s project repository documents the implementation.

How the model is prepared

  1. Create examples: Bild made about 100 retro-inspired sprites using a spreadsheet-assisted workflow.
  2. Encode the sprites: He represented the small images as binary strings for the model workflow.
  3. Calculate model parameters off-device: A modern computer calculates information including a mean matrix and covariance matrix from the examples.
  4. Prepare the generation logic: Bild simplified the randomization and generation script, removing dependencies such as NumPy so the logic could be converted to C64-compatible BASIC.
  5. Generate on the C64: The BASIC program uses the prepared model information to generate new images within the distribution of the training examples.

In Bild’s own words, the goal was “to adapt a probabilistic PCA algorithm to run on a Commodore 64, with the goal of producing 8×8 retro game sprites that could have been used to inspire a game design.” The important distinction is that the model’s preparation happens elsewhere; the C64 runs the simplified generation stage.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How large the sprites are—and how long generation takes

The generator produces 8×8 source images and enlarges them to 64×64 for display. That eightfold enlargement in each dimension makes the tiny patterns easier to view; it does not add detail to the original sprite.

Bild’s project README says 94 iterations took about 20 minutes on a C64. He notes that more iterations generally improve results but take longer. This is the creator’s reported example, not an independently timed benchmark or a guaranteed runtime for every C64 setup. Hackaday also reported the approximate timing in its May 15, 2024 coverage, “Generative AI Hits The Commodore 64.”

What this demonstration shows

The project is a constrained creative experiment: a small statistical generator can be adapted so a vintage computer produces new 8×8 sprite ideas using prepared parameters and simplified BASIC logic. It is not evidence that a Commodore 64 can train or run today’s large-scale generative AI systems. The repository’s documented bill of materials lists one C64; it does not establish that extra accessories are required.
