Gemini in Google Sheets can help you explore a dataset, create charts and formulas, build tables, and make spreadsheet changes from plain-language instructions. You can review its analysis, preview charts and edits, and decide what to apply—but you should verify generated results against the underlying data.
What Gemini can do in Google Sheets
Gemini works in the Sheets side panel for questions and analysis, and it can also help create or change spreadsheet content. Google lists capabilities including:
- Answering questions about spreadsheet data, surfacing insights, and summarizing a spreadsheet.
- Suggesting charts and graphs, creating formulas, and generating tables.
- Creating pivot tables, applying filters or conditional formatting, changing number formats, sorting data, and formatting tables.
- Adding dropdowns or checkboxes, filling ranges, and carrying out row or column operations.
- Summarizing emails and files from Google Drive and Gmail.
The available features can depend on language and rollout status. Google’s feature overview describes the current set and access details in its Gemini in Sheets help page.
How to use Gemini to analyze a spreadsheet
1. Open a compatible spreadsheet
Open a native Google Sheets file and select Ask Gemini to use the side panel. Gemini features work best with Google Sheets files. If you have an Excel workbook, save it as a Google Sheet before using these features. See Google’s instructions for building or editing spreadsheets with Gemini.

2. Ask a question about the data
Ask a specific question that identifies what you want to learn. Google’s examples include “Identify trends in this table” and “How can I show regression and prediction of this data?” You can also ask, “Summarize this spreadsheet.” A focused request gives you a clearer answer to evaluate than a broad prompt such as “Analyze this.”
When Gemini provides analysis steps, inspect them to understand how it reached its answer. Google also describes exporting an answer to Docs when you want to use it elsewhere. For examples of Gemini queries, see the Google Workspace Learning Center.

3. Generate and review a chart
Describe the data you want to visualize and, if you have a preference, name the chart type or fields. Preview the proposed chart before inserting it. An inserted chart appears on a new tab with its underlying data and can be edited; however, it does not update in response to later changes in the original dataset. If the source data changes, check the chart and its supporting data rather than assuming it remains current. Google explains this behavior in its chart instructions.
4. Ask Gemini to make a spreadsheet change
Use natural language to request a specific operation—for example, creating a pivot table, applying a filter, formatting values, or adding dropdowns. Review the action preview card before applying the change. If the result is not what you intended, Google’s workflow allows you to undo an applied action.

Use the AI function for repeatable text tasks
For work that belongs in cells, Google documents an AI function using =AI() and =Gemini() forms. It can generate text, summarize, categorize, analyze sentiment, and access real-time information from Google Search. Google also describes AI columns in tables. These options can be useful for processing repeated text entries; check the function’s result and the relevant help page for supported use and syntax, because availability may vary. Use enhanced Smart Fill for incomplete columns
When two columns contain a pattern with missing values, enhanced Smart Fill can detect the relationship and predict remaining entries. This can help with repeated text-processing tasks, but predictions still need checking, particularly when names, labels, or exceptions do not follow a consistent pattern. Google says enhanced Smart Fill is available on desktop; see its Smart Fill instructions.

Access requirements and limitations
Gemini in Sheets requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Workspace Experiments is another access path for some features. Eligibility and feature availability can differ by language and rollout, so confirm the current requirements for your account in Google’s feature and access documentation.
Google cautions that “Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.” Its table-feature guidance also says suggestions may be inaccurate or inappropriate, do not represent Google’s views, and should not be relied on for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. Treat generated analysis as a starting point: check formulas, totals, assumptions, and conclusions against the source data before using them to make decisions.
