Game studios and other game-industry professionals report using generative AI most often for research and brainstorming, routine work, code assistance, and prototyping. The evidence points to a mix of practical assistance, asset-focused experiments, and sharply different company policies—not a universal studio practice or proof that AI-generated content appears in every released game.
How widely are game professionals using generative AI?
Adoption figures depend on who was asked. The Game Developers Conference (GDC) says its 2026 State of the Game Industry report draws on responses from more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. In that survey, 36% said they used generative AI tools as part of their job; separately, 30% of respondents at game studios reported using AI tools. The figures describe different respondent groups and should not be treated as equivalent measures of studio-wide adoption. GDC’s 2026 report
These are survey responses, not a census of studios. They show that use is present, but do not establish that every studio uses these tools, how many employees use them at a given company, or whether a particular game includes generated material.
What tasks are studios and developers using AI for?
In GDC’s 2026 reporting, people who use generative AI named several work tasks. The reported percentages are task-use responses, not shares of studios, and respondents may use multiple tools for different purposes.

Research, ideation, and routine work
Research and brainstorming lead the reported uses. In practice, that category can include exploring an idea or helping with routine information work, while daily-task use includes examples such as email. The survey establishes reported use, not the accuracy of any answer or the quality of the resulting creative decisions.

Code and prototypes
Code assistance and prototyping also appear in GDC’s 2026 list of reported uses. GDC’s Trends Report describes conference discussion of automated coding, brainstorming, outlining, and routine administrative support. Those reports show that these workflows are being discussed or used; they do not establish that AI-generated code is correct, production-ready, or responsible for measured savings. Concept art, 3D assets, and production tools
GDC’s 2025 survey records concept art and 3D-model generation among applications developers identified for the game industry, alongside coding support and repetitive-task automation. A 2026 GDC Trends Report describes two more specific examples: Tencent Games’ skeleton-generation model and Adobe Substance 3D Painter’s Warp to Geometry feature. These are examples of tools and approaches, not evidence that finished game art is routinely generated this way or that the techniques are widespread across studios. Player-facing dialogue, voices, music, and game content
The cited survey summaries and conference reporting do not establish how extensively generative AI is used in shipped player-facing dialogue, narrative, voices, music, or other game content. Reports about developers’ work tools and conference examples alone cannot demonstrate that a released game uses generated content.
Do game studios have a common AI policy?
No single policy emerges from the GDC findings. In its 2025 survey, 64% of respondents said their company had some form of internal generative-AI policy, up from 51% in GDC’s 2024 report. The reported policy approaches vary: some companies leave tool use optional, permit selected tools, disallow use, or mandate it; some respondents reported no policy or did not know the policy. For an employee or contractor, a survey figure is no substitute for checking the current rules that apply to their work and tools.

GDC’s 2025 report names concerns including intellectual-property theft, energy consumption, generated-content quality, potential bias, and regulation. Those are issues respondents raised; the survey does not itself determine whether a particular use infringes rights or meets a legal standard.

Views about the industry’s overall impact remain divided. In GDC’s 2026 survey summary, 52% of respondents viewed generative AI as having a negative impact on the game industry, while about 7% saw a positive impact. These percentages measure respondents’ perceptions, not legal findings, product quality, or a measured effect on jobs or studio performance. GDC’s 2026 report
Conference discussion also reflects differing positions on creative control and workforce effects. GDC’s Trends Report attributes this view to Alexander Mufrik, product lead at Google DeepMind: “Even if the models could do it, we would not want to use them in that way.” Nathan Chen, head of technology at Tencent Games, offered a more optimistic argument: “AI is not the end of game development. How should you interpret claims about adoption?
Survey results and conference examples answer different questions. GDC’s surveys describe what respondents say they do, think, or permit; conference reporting identifies examples and arguments. Neither establishes comparable production gains across studios.
Google Cloud’s 2025 games-report page describes a Harris Poll survey of 615 developers and reports that 90% used AI in workflows and 95% automated repetitive tasks. Google Cloud is a commercial AI and cloud vendor promoting the report. Its figures use a different survey framing and sample from GDC’s, so they should be read as vendor-sponsored survey claims—not compared directly with GDC’s percentages as though the populations and questions matched.
