Game studios protect unreleased games with layers of controls: confidentiality rules, restricted access to builds, agreements for outside testers, and measures that can help trace unauthorized sharing. These are documented examples from particular companies, platforms, and service providers—not a single standard followed by every studio. Public policies also set expectations for people who encounter leaked footage or story spoilers.
How do studios keep an unreleased game confidential?
Confidentiality starts with deciding who may access information and who may speak about it. Ubisoft’s Code of Conduct says employees must protect unreleased confidential information even after a game is announced. It also directs employees who are not official spokespeople to route media, analyst, and investor inquiries to the appropriate communications staff. The code recommends secure processes for logins, device configuration, and third-party services.
That is one company’s policy, not proof that every studio handles internal information the same way. The available examples also do not establish how studios divide story details internally—for example, whether a particular team limits access to specific plot points. Such practices may exist, but they cannot be assumed from the sources cited here.
How do confidential game playtests work?
Setting up a test through Steam
Steamworks documents a way to run a confidential playtest for an unannounced game using release override keys on the unreleased base app. The setup requires care: Steam key access alone does not put recipients under the developer’s non-disclosure agreement (NDA). The developer must separately register participants and obtain their agreement before distributing access. Steamworks also recommends considering a nondescript codename and planning how release override keys will be managed after the test ends. See the Steam Playtest documentation.

Managing external testers
PlaytestCloud describes several controls it offers for external playtests: requiring testers to accept an NDA before receiving build access, adding an optional visible watermark tied to a unique player ID, disabling access after a test concludes, and checking that a build does not inadvertently identify the studio or project. These are provider-described options; they should not be read as a checklist used by every studio. Details are on PlaytestCloud’s security page.
What watermarks can—and cannot—do
A watermark can make a recording or copy more traceable by associating it with a tester, user, build, or distribution context. PlaytestCloud says its visible watermark links recordings to a unique tester ID. Denuvo by Irdeto describes identifiers associated with users, builds, or distribution environments in its discussion of pre-release game security.

This is an investigative aid, not a guarantee that a leak will be prevented or conclusively attributed. A watermark may help narrow down where material came from, but the cited vendor descriptions do not establish that every leak can be traced.
What do publishers say about leaked footage and spoilers?
Square Enix
Square Enix’s West Material Usage Policy prohibits posting unofficial game content, including leaked or embargo-violating material, and asks creators to mark spoilers clearly. The policy has scope exceptions for certain franchises, so its terms should be checked for the specific game rather than applied universally.

Rockstar Games
Rockstar Games Support says it will take down footage from leaked copies posted before a game’s official release. It identifies endings, cutscene compilations, and major story reveals as spoiler material in its policy on posting copyrighted Rockstar Games material. These pages state publisher policies; they do not establish all legal consequences that might apply in every jurisdiction.
