A dependable gate checks what players and customers will see, visual and technical quality, rights and human contributions, provenance evidence, content policies, and the destination platform’s disclosure requirements. Passing one check does not clear the others.
How should a studio review AI-generated art before release?
Use a documented release gate that connects each final asset to its source, review, and intended use. Include AI-assisted elements embedded in composites, not only files produced entirely by an image generator.

Inventory and classify the assets
Build the inventory from the release candidate. For each asset, record an identifier, intended use, source tool and model if known, generation or edit date, human edits and selection decisions, applicable licenses or approvals, reviewer, and final disposition. Record prompts and reference inputs where studio policy permits. Classify each item as internal-only, shipped and player-consumed, marketing or store-page material, or generated live during play.
Link the final file to its source material and review record. This makes it possible to identify which assets players will encounter and to reconcile the build with store materials.

Inspect the art in its actual production context
Have an artist or art lead inspect the shipped-resolution asset in the scene, interface, or marketing layout where it will appear. Check anatomy, hands, silhouettes, repeated motifs, unintended text or logos, perspective, lighting, edge artifacts, tiling seams, transparency, compression, color profile, dimensions, and alpha channels against the project’s visual direction.
For textures, inspect them in-engine under representative lighting and at the mip levels used in play. These are practical studio QA controls, not requirements stated in the platform documentation below.

Document human creative work and permissions
Keep records of the selection, composition, redraw, paint-over, or other expressive changes made by people. Preserve the relevant tool or model terms, source and reference assets, permission basis, licenses, and approvals. A prompt log can help document the process, but by itself it does not establish that a human authored the expressive elements of the final work.

Escalate recognizable characters or logos, concerns about imitation of a living artist, suspiciously close matches, and uncertain reference sources for legal review. There is no universal similarity threshold established by the sources cited here, and a checklist cannot guarantee that an asset is non-infringing.

Use provenance records as evidence, not a verdict
Preserve original exports and inspect available Content Credentials or C2PA manifests and supported watermarks. Compare any provenance information with vendor records and the studio’s own logs; keep the validation result with the asset. A signed manifest can bind claims to an asset, but it does not independently establish that those claims are true or that use of the asset is lawful.
If no signal is found, record provenance as unknown unless other evidence establishes the asset’s origin. Conversion, editing, or sharing can strip metadata, and substantial edits can make watermarks undetectable. OpenAI’s verification guidance covers supported OpenAI-associated signals, not every AI system; a negative result is not proof that an image was made by a person. Check content and destination-platform requirements
Review the asset and its use against the game’s age rating, community rules, and applicable platform policies. Complete the destination platform’s forms using the final build and store materials. For live-generated content, document the safeguards that govern what the system can produce and how players can encounter it.

Sign off on the exact release candidate
Store a dated approval tied to the asset inventory, build number, store-page materials, platform answers, and any exceptions. Recheck after late art changes, localization, marketing updates, or a replacement build. Changes to a platform submission can require a fresh review; Steam notes that some survey answers may need Steam Support to change after approval.

What should studios disclose on Steam or Roblox?
Steam
Steam’s Content Survey distinguishes pre-generated AI content shipped with the game and consumed by players from content generated live during play. Its scope includes artwork. Steam says survey answers are compared with the build and store page, and that pre-generated AI outputs are reviewed before release. For live-generated output, developers are expected to describe their guardrails. Complete the Steamworks Content Survey against the final release candidate and check that the store page accurately reflects the product.

Roblox
Roblox separately makes developers responsible for ensuring third-party generated content meets its standards. Its Creator Hub guidance also covers AI interaction disclosures in the Content Maturity questionnaire and restrictions for extended interactions. Review the current Roblox generative AI guidance alongside Community Standards and Content Maturity obligations for the experience being submitted.
Other destinations
Do not assume Steam or Roblox rules apply elsewhere. Check the current requirements for each storefront, platform, and jurisdiction where the game or its marketing will appear.

In the United States, the Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 position is that copyrightability depends on sufficient expressive elements determined by a human author. Human-authored work perceptible in an output, or a human’s creative arrangement or modification, can matter; a prompt alone is not the same as human authorship. Preserve evidence of the actual creative contribution. The Office described its forthcoming Part 3 as addressing legal implications of training data, so its announcement does not resolve training-data licensing or infringement questions. Copyrightability and permission to use an image are separate questions. Whether a studio can claim copyright in its own contribution does not by itself decide whether the image infringes someone else’s rights or whether its use complies with a license. The Copyright Office’s position is a U.S. copyrightability framing, not a universal rule or a determination of every rights issue.
What can provenance signals establish?
C2PA allows signed provenance manifests to carry assertions about matters such as creator, copyright holder, rights, and licensing. Its specification says the standard validates whether assertions are associated with the asset, correctly formed, and untampered with; it does not judge whether their content is “good” or “bad.” Read the C2PA 2.4 specification as a technical account of provenance, not a legal clearance certificate.
OpenAI likewise cautions that its signals do not establish legal ownership, accuracy, authorship, or context. Treat a positive signal as one part of an audit trail and investigate missing or conflicting evidence rather than relying on a detector as a universal classifier.
How should studios evaluate review tools and workflows?
No single review tool is established as the best choice. Compare tools and processes on the capabilities that affect the studio’s release gate:

- Supported file types, provenance standards, and AI-associated signals, including known blind spots.
- Retention of original files, validation results, and audit logs.
- Integration with the asset database, art pipeline, and build process.
- Fields for rights, licenses, source references, and human edits.
- Visual QA and content-moderation capabilities.
- Accessibility, privacy, and support for each release platform.
- How missing or conflicting evidence is handled—and whether the process avoids treating detection as legal clearance.
