Video game awards do not share one definition of “Game of the Year.” The Game Awards relies on a media jury with a small public-vote share; D.I.C.E. and the Game Developers Choice Awards use industry peers; BAFTA combines membership voting with specialist juries; and the Golden Joystick Awards puts its core winners to a public vote. Different voters, eligibility dates, and counting rules can therefore produce different winners without any one result being the universal verdict.
Who votes for Game of the Year?
It depends on the show: critics and publications choose nominees and largely determine winners at The Game Awards; industry professionals decide D.I.C.E., BAFTA, and the Game Developers Choice Awards; and the public chooses the main Golden Joystick winners. Some awards combine these groups or reserve particular categories for a separate electorate.
| Award | Who selects nominees? | Who selects winners? | What kind of result does it emphasize? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Game Awards (TGA) | Jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets | Jury (90%) and public fan vote (10%) | Media-jury consensus, with a limited fan share |
| D.I.C.E. Awards | Volunteer peer panels narrow submitted games to finalists | Eligible Academy members using ranked-choice instant runoff | Industry-peer consensus |
| BAFTA Games Awards | Games members create a longlist; specialist members and juries determine category nominations | Full games membership for three major categories; juries for most others | Professional membership and category-specific deliberation |
| Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) | ICAN members in the 2026 cycle; required submissions begin in 2027 | Industry network in 2026; 2027 final ballot rules are not fully specified in the published information | Creator and developer perspectives |
| Golden Joystick Awards | Future editors and a journalist network choose the shortlist | Public for core categories; journalist panel for selected critics’ categories | Public preference in the core categories |
“Game of the Year” is a category within each show, not a single cross-industry election. Even when several ceremonies nominate the same title, their voters and procedures are different.
How are The Game Awards winners decided?
A jury of more than 100 global media and influencer outlets selects the nominees and supplies 90% of the winner vote; public fan voting supplies the remaining 10%. Those proportions apply to the main award categories, not to the separate Players’ Voice award.

How nominees make the ballot
Each voting outlet submits one confidential, unranked ballot in each category, listing its top five choices. The five games appearing on the greatest number of ballots become nominees. If there is a tie for the final place, the category can have six or more nominees. TGA says outlets are selected for their history of critical game evaluation, and each ballot is intended to represent the collective view of that outlet’s editorial staff.
Most categories use this jury. Specialized juries handle esports, accessibility, and best adaptation. Games do not need to be entered: every commercially available game within the eligibility window is automatically eligible, with no entry form or fee. The Game Awards’ official FAQ says its producer, Geoff Keighley, is not a jury member and does not vote; the Advisory Board also has no role in selecting nominees or winners.
How the public vote fits in
For the main categories, fan votes are blended with the jury’s vote at a 10% public-to-90% jury weighting. The official FAQ says a full public vote could disadvantage games exclusive to one platform and could be “socially engineered,” and that the blended method is intended to protect credibility. Fans vote at TheGameAwards.com; the 2026 rules specify Bilibili for fans in China.

Players’ Voice is a different award: it is fully public and runs through multiple rounds. Its result should not be mistaken for the 10% fan contribution to the main category ballots.
What can qualify in the 2026 cycle?
For the 2026 show, a game must be commercially available to customers by November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. Pacific Time. Players’ Voice has a separate shipping cutoff of November 30. The show is scheduled for December 10 in Los Angeles, and TGA fan voting closes December 9 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
- Early-access games publicly available by the deadline can qualify.
- Earlier live-service games remain eligible if the jury finds that new content, improvements, or service updates merit recognition; Best Ongoing Game addresses that kind of work.
- Expansions, new seasons, downloadable content, remakes, and remasters may qualify when the jury considers their new creative and technical work worthy.
There is a practical timing issue for late releases: Aftermath reported that eligible games were expected to provide voter code by October 30 for the 2026 cycle, ahead of the November 20 public-availability cutoff. A title can meet the formal cutoff yet leave voters little time to play it before ballots are completed. Nominees have also been announced before the eligibility window closes in past years, so announcement timing alone does not establish that a later release was excluded.
How does D.I.C.E. Awards voting work?
D.I.C.E. is a peer award run by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS). Volunteer panels first reduce submitted games to a maximum of five finalists per category; eligible Academy members then rank their choices, and instant-runoff voting identifies the winner.

Who can vote
Active Creative/Technical, Business, and Affiliate members vote in genre categories and several top-level awards, including Game of the Year, Immersive Reality Game of the Year, Mobile Game of the Year, Online Game of the Year, and Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game. Craft categories are restricted to members with relevant creative experience. Creative/Technical members select an expertise area—such as design and production, art, animation and programming, or audio and music—which determines the matching craft ballots they can vote on.
How instant runoff works
- Members rank up to three nominated games in order of preference.
- First-choice votes are counted. A game with more than 50% wins.
- If no game has a majority, the game with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated. Ballots for that game transfer to the next-ranked remaining choice.
- The count and eliminations repeat until one game has a majority.
AIAS says ranked voting is intended to give the winner broad support among members. AIAS tabulates the results, with awards voting and certification provided by Votenet Solutions, Inc.
The 29th D.I.C.E. Awards, held in February 2026 for games released in 2025, had 64 nominated games. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Ghost of Yōtei each received eight nominations. Their Game of the Year category also included Arc Raiders, Blue Prince, and Dispatch.
How are the BAFTA Games Awards judged?
BAFTA starts with a games-professional membership vote, then sends most categories to small juries that play the longlisted titles, discuss them, and vote by secret ballot. Best Game, British Game, and Evolving Game follow a membership-vote track instead of the usual jury track in the 2027 cycle.
Who votes, and how categories split
BAFTA’s 2027 rules give approximately 1,700 games-professional members a first-round vote. That is the current official figure for the cycle; GamesIndustry.biz reported just over 1,400 games members in an August 2025 snapshot, so the numbers refer to different points in time rather than competing estimates of the same count. BAFTA says its games voters are approximately 80% in Europe and 20% in the United States.
Specialist chapters vote in the first round for Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Game Design, Technical Achievement, and the two performer categories. All games members vote in other categories. The subsequent process branches:
- Best Game, British Game, and Evolving Game: full games membership votes in rounds two and three, choosing six nominees and then a winner.
- Most other categories: a jury of nine to twelve industry experts considers the longlist. The jurors discuss the ten games and blind-vote six nominees and a winner. They leave knowing the nominees, but not the winner.
BAFTA says jurors must have played each of the ten longlisted games. Juries are chaired by a current or former Games Committee member; around half the jurors are BAFTA games members and half are non-members. BAFTA also describes conflict-of-interest rules, bias training, and a policy against having jurors sit on the same jury in consecutive years. Voting is authenticated by appointed scrutineers.

What is eligible, and what does entry cost?
For the 2027 ceremony, games must have a UK release between November 15, 2025, and November 19, 2026. Entry is paid through BAFTA’s entry portal. The fees below are for the 2027 cycle and were checked in November 2026.
| Entry | Fee | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard game entry | £475 plus VAT (£570) | Up to four selected craft or genre categories; eligible Best Game, British Game, and performer categories are included |
| Each additional category | £150 plus VAT (£180) | One category beyond the four-category allowance |
| Evolving Game | £300 plus VAT (£350) | One entry; this category can be entered only once |
| Eligible small studio discount | 25% off on appeal | For studios of 1–20 people without publisher financial backing or creative control |
A game cannot normally be entered again, except in Evolving Game. Remasters are ineligible unless the original game came out before the first BAFTA Games Awards in 2004. Remakes cannot enter Best Game or British Game, although a remake with significant originality can enter specified technical, performer, and craft categories. DLC is not treated as a standalone game; it may qualify in performer or most craft categories if the work in that area is wholly original, and an overview of in-window DLC can support an Evolving Game statement. Early access is generally ineligible, though appeals are considered by the Games Committee.
Entrants name up to three people with the most significant creative contribution in each category, or list unnamed Development Team representatives. Those representatives cannot later claim an individual BAFTA win. BAFTA’s stated purpose is to recognize outstanding human achievement in making games; its 2027 rules may request credit information and materials about human creativity for entries involving AI assistance.
Why can BAFTA choose a different winner?
BAFTA’s process gives jurors time to play and debate a limited set of games, while its membership track and specialist chapters reflect a professional academy structure. Former Games Committee chair Tara Saunders told Polygon that BAFTA members can lean toward innovation and narrative depth rather than budget and hype, and described the membership as people who recognize craftsmanship. That preference is not a formal scoring formula; it is one explanation for why BAFTA’s choices can diverge from a broader media or public vote.
The schedule also differs. For 2027, the first voting round runs from November 23 to December 2, 2026; the longlist is due December 8, jury copies December 16, nominations March 11, and the ceremony April 14, 2027. The long gap gives members and jurors time to play titles, but means BAFTA’s award arrives months after many games’ original release.

The GDCA is an industry-peer award, but its nomination funnel changes in 2027. The 2026 awards used an invited network of creators; for games launching in 2026 and considered for the 2027 awards, publishers and developers must submit titles, and the complete winner-selection rules have not yet been fully published.
2026: invitation-only peer voting
For the 2026 ceremony, eligible games were those released and publicly available to consumers during calendar year 2025, on any platform. Upgrades, expansions, and mission packs were not eligible. The International Choice Awards Network (ICAN), described as an invitation-only group of more than 500 creators, developers, and industry members, made nominations and winner selections. Members recused themselves from games with which they were personally involved.

The process had three rounds: members recommended individuals for special awards; nominated up to three titles in each category; then scored finalists from zero to five, with each member’s vote counted once. After nominations, the GDCA Awards Committee reviewed the results to help select finalists. Main-category finalists with the most votes won, except for the Audience Award, which drew nominees from the finalist pool and was voted on by GDC attendees and the public. The 2026 ceremony took place March 12.
2027: submission is required
For the first time, developers and publishers must submit games to be considered for the 2027 GDCA. Eligible PC and console games must launch between January 1 and December 31, 2026. The deadline is November 1, 2026; there is no entry fee. New categories include Best Game Launch and Best Gaming Tech, and the ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2027.

How do Golden Joystick Awards nominees and winners get chosen?
Future’s judging panel and journalist network choose the shortlist, while the public votes for winners in the core categories. A smaller group of categories—including Critics’ Choice, Breakthrough, and Streamers’ Choice—is selected by journalists rather than by public vote.
For 2026, the core eligibility window was November 1, 2025, through September 25, 2026, with limited exceptions for games released early in the public voting window when judges already had review code. Ongoing games that launched earlier could qualify for Still Playing and Best Game Expansion. Most Wanted covered games planned for release after November 11, 2026. Ultimate Game of the Year used a different release window, November 8, 2025, through October 25, 2026, with similar review-code exceptions; critically selected categories used November 20, 2025, through November 11, 2026.
For the 2026 edition, the main ballot opened September 25 and closed October 23 at 23:00 UTC. The Ultimate Game of the Year shortlist and voting ran October 26–30, with the ceremony scheduled for November 11 in London. The 2025 Golden Joystick Awards drew a record-breaking 21 million public votes, according to MCV/DEVELOP. That figure describes votes cast, not unique voters.
Are video game awards just a popularity contest?
No single answer fits every show. Golden Joystick’s core categories are decided by public votes, making audience preference central; TGA combines fan input with a much larger jury share; and D.I.C.E., BAFTA, and GDCA rely on industry members or juries. A large public turnout can make a fan-driven result highly visible without turning every award into a popularity vote.

Each model has trade-offs. Media outlets can bring broad critical coverage but their ballots reflect publication-based judgment. Peer systems bring professional context, though their members may not have time to play every release; Geoff Keighley has cited that time constraint as a reason TGA uses media outlets rather than developer voters. BAFTA’s juries can discuss and compare games in depth, but jury composition and deliberation are not the same as a public election. None of these procedures makes one show’s winner objectively definitive across all players.
Can developers vote for their own games?
There is no universal rule across the awards. GDCA’s 2026 ICAN rules require members to recuse themselves from games they are personally involved with. BAFTA requires jurors to avoid conflicts of interest, while D.I.C.E. uses member eligibility and category-specific voting rules. TGA ballots come from media outlets, not a developer peer electorate; the published process says the jury votes on the work but does not describe every outlet’s internal conflict policy.
Is there an entry fee to be nominated?
Not at every show. TGA says all eligible games are automatically considered without an entry form or fee, and GDCA charges no submission fee for its 2027 cycle. BAFTA charges an entry fee, while D.I.C.E. requires studio or publisher submissions and Golden Joystick accepts industry nominations for its shortlist; the cited rules do not state comparable entry fees for those latter two.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy do BAFTA and The Game Awards pick different winners?
Their voter groups and winner methods differ. TGA’s main awards reflect a large outlet jury with a 10% fan share; BAFTA uses games-professional membership voting for some categories and deliberating specialist juries for most others. They also have different eligibility windows and schedules, so the candidate pool and the time voters have with late-year releases may not match.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does The Game Awards publish the exact vote totals for each nominee?
No original category-by-category TGA vote totals are provided in its published materials described here. The published 90/10 weighting explains how the two voter groups contribute, but it does not reveal how close any individual race was.
Can a late-November release still be eligible for The Game Awards?
A commercially available game can meet the 2026 eligibility rule if it is out by November 20 at 9 p.m. PT. That does not guarantee a nomination: ballots and voter access can be settled earlier, and late availability leaves less time for voters to play.
When does fan voting close for The Game Awards 2026?
The scheduled 2026 fan-vote close is December 9 at 6 p.m. PT, the day before the December 10 ceremony. Fans in China vote through Bilibili.
