Frog-inspired robots use more than one strategy to move between land and water. One prototype stores energy in elastic rods that snap to create a jump, then uses flexible fins to swim. Another uses combustion-driven hindlimbs for jumping and a separate cable-driven, webbed-foot system for swimming. These are different experimental designs, not a single standard mechanism.
How an elastic snap creates a hop
A UCLA–University of Michigan prototype uses elastic rods arranged as helical limbs. A motor gradually bends and twists a rod. When the rod reaches a geometry-dependent critical point, it snaps into a new shape and releases stored elastic energy as a rapid push. The motor provides the slower wind-up; the rod’s sudden release supplies the burst that propels the robot.
In this design, the same hopping mechanism remains in place for land movement. Thin, flexible fins fitted to the robot provide propulsion in water, so changing modes means using added aquatic surfaces rather than switching to an entirely separate drive system.
How a hybrid-drive robot changes its propulsion
A distinct amphibious robot described in a 2026 study uses different mechanisms for land and water. For a land jump, combustion drives its hindlimbs, while a linkage adjusts forelimb posture. In water, cable-driven linked hindlimbs move a controllable soft, webbed foot to generate propulsion.

- Remote Controlled Robot Frog
- Fully stretchable, can move and jump in all directions
- Stretchable tongue that allows him to grab 'food'
- Inclief fun shooting game and other accessories
- Robo Frog has twisting eyes and makes all kinds of frog sounds
The study describes a continuous demonstration: the robot moved from a pool edge up a shallow slope, jumped onto a land platform, then jumped back into the water and continued swimming. That is a documented land-water sequence, unlike simply reporting hopping and swimming capabilities separately.
What the reported results show
The UCLA Samueli report describes its prototype as 11 cm long and 98.2 g. It reached 3.21 body lengths per second on wood and averaged 2.46 body lengths per second across six surfaces. A rigid-legged counterpart averaged 0.79 body lengths per second across those terrain tests. With flexible fins fitted, the robot swam at about 0.5 body lengths per second and could turn and navigate around obstacles. These are study-reported prototype results, not product specifications.

The 2026 hybrid-robot study reports a swimming speed of 79 mm/s, a jump height of 560 mm, and a jump distance of 1,200 mm. These values describe that robot and its study; they should not be ranked directly against the other prototype’s body-length-per-second figures. The designs and reported measures differ, and the figures do not come from a head-to-head test.
How these designs compare
| Design | Actuation and energy | What changes for swimming | What was demonstrated |
|---|---|---|---|
| UCLA–Michigan elastic-rod prototype | A motor slowly bends and twists elastic rods; snap-through releases stored energy for a hop. | Thin flexible fins provide swimming propulsion. | Hopping performance on land and swimming, turning, and obstacle navigation in water were reported. |
| 2026 hybrid-driven amphibious robot | Combustion-driven hindlimbs power jumps; a linkage adjusts forelimb posture. | Cable-driven linked hindlimbs move a controllable soft webbed foot. | A sequence from pool to slope and land platform, then back into the water, was described. |
| 2015 swimming-focused prototype | Pneumatic muscles drive hip, knee, and ankle joints; cable transmission helps reduce leg mass. | Designed for swimming; a hopping transition is not established in the report. | An average 339 mm/s during the propulsion phase was reported. |
The 2015 design is useful context for frog-like swimming mechanisms, but its reported swimming result is not evidence of a hop-to-swim transition. More broadly, the studies show that a frog-like robot can preserve one land mechanism and add fins, or use distinct actuation paths for land and water.

What the demonstrations do—and do not—establish
These are experimental research robots. The reported work does not establish production readiness, long-term durability, waterproof ratings, or repeatability in manufactured units. Because the designs and test measures differ, their reported speeds and jump distances are descriptive results rather than controlled comparisons.
