Fortnite does not continuously send every voice conversation to Epic. When Voice Reporting is on, the game keeps a rolling five-minute audio buffer on participants’ devices; if someone reports the conversation, the report and the latest five minutes are sent to Epic moderators. Reporting is a request for review, not proof of a violation or a guarantee of punishment.
How does voice reporting in Fortnite work?
Epic introduced Voice Reporting on November 16, 2023, to let players submit audio evidence of suspected Community Rules violations, including bullying, harassment, and discrimination. When the feature is on, the latest five minutes of voice chat are held locally on participants’ devices, such as a console or PC. As the buffer advances, older audio is deleted. If a participant reports the conversation, the reportable audio is uploaded to Epic moderators. Epic says it cannot access voice-chat audio unless Voice Reporting is on and a participant submits a report. Epic’s feature announcement and its current support FAQ explain the capture and upload process.

Who can turn Voice Reporting off?
Epic says Voice Reporting is always on for players under 18. Adults can choose a preference, but “Off When Possible” is conditional: it turns reporting off only in qualifying parties formed among friends when every participant has selected “Off When Possible.” Check the Voice Reporting status shown in the game’s Sidebar instead of assuming the preference applies in every party or channel. Muting yourself or turning voice chat off are separate ways to stop participating in voice chat.
How to report bad player behavior in Fortnite
Fortnite provides reporting routes for voice conversations, text chat, and player conduct. The available menus can vary with the chat feature and account settings. Epic reviews reports to determine whether action is warranted under its Terms of Service and Code of Conduct; a submission alone does not establish that a rule was broken.

Report a voice conversation
- Open the profile or social controls in Fortnite and choose the relevant conversation or player menu.
- Select Report chat and follow the on-screen prompts.
- If Voice Reporting is on, the report can include only the latest five minutes of audio. Audio older than that has already rolled out of the local buffer.
See Epic’s voice-chat reporting instructions for the current menu path.
Report text chat or a player
- Text chat: When text chat and text reporting are enabled, submit a conversation through the Chats interface or use the menu on a specific message.
- Player conduct: Open the in-game report menu, a player profile, or a recently played or voice-channel player list. Select the player, choose the report reason, and submit the report.
Epic’s player-behavior reporting guide describes these routes. Give an accurate account of what happened; do not treat a report as a verdict.

How do I manage my party, voice chat, and text chat options in Fortnite?
Fortnite has two voice-chat channels. Party Chat connects members of a party across Epic surfaces. Game Chat communicates with players in the same island instance when the island creator supports it. The chat settings control who can communicate with you, while Voice Reporting controls whether a conversation can be submitted with reportable audio. These are different settings.
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Party Chat | Voice communication with party members across Epic surfaces. |
| Game Chat | Voice communication with players in the same island instance, when supported by the island creator. |
| Communication audience | Who may communicate with you: Everybody; Friends, Team Members, and Connections; Friends Only; or Off. |
| Mute, unmute, and deafen | Whether you hear or transmit audio from particular participants, using the available in-game controls. |
| Voice Reporting | Whether recent voice audio is held in the rolling buffer and can be included when a participant reports a conversation. |
Epic’s chat-options guide covers the controls and their current labels.

Age, cabined accounts, and parental controls
Epic says chat settings default to Off for players who indicated they are under 18, and children under 10 have a maximum setting of Friends Only. Parental controls may impose stricter limits. A cabined account may not have voice or text chat until a parent or guardian completes Epic’s consent process. Available controls can depend on age and account status, so parents should check both the in-game options and the account portal. Epic’s parental-controls guide describes the account controls.
Turning off voice chat in an Epic game may not disable a console’s separate party-chat system. Review the console’s own communication and parental-control settings as well as Epic’s.

What happens after a Fortnite report?
Epic says enforcement depends on the severity of the conduct and the number of offenses. The measures described in its Community Rules and enforcement guidance are possible outcomes, not a fixed penalty ladder that applies to every report.
- A warning.
- Removal of offending content in relevant experiences or marketplaces.
- A temporary restriction on features, which may include purchases, adding friends, or social features such as voice or text chat.
- A permanent account ban.
Epic does not promise that any particular report will result in a sanction. The published guidance also does not provide a rate for reports that lead to enforcement.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
How do I appeal a communication ban on my Epic Games account?
If Epic has restricted your communication, check the account email for the case notice and Sanction ID. Sign in to the Sanctions and Appeals portal, review the case, and follow the appeal steps if the case is eligible. Some violations cannot be appealed. Epic Support says it cannot override a communication restriction; the portal is the route Epic specifies.
- Find the Sanction ID in the notice sent to the account email.
- Sign in to Epic’s Sanctions and Appeals portal.
- Review the case and submit an appeal there if the portal marks it eligible.
Epic’s communication-ban appeal instructions explain the process.
