Flight tracking apps combine aircraft position reports with flight schedules, plans, airline updates and aviation-system data. Position feeds show where an aircraft is; additional operational information helps identify its flight and report events such as departure or delay. Some apps also calculate arrival and delay estimates. Because providers use different feeds and coverage, an app’s map position is not the same thing as an airline-confirmed status.
How do flight tracking apps know where an aircraft is?
Many aircraft broadcast their position and related data using Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B). The Federal Aviation Administration says ADS-B Out broadcasts GPS location, altitude, ground speed and other aircraft data to ground stations and other aircraft once per second. The FAA compares that broadcast frequency with radar, which sweeps for position information every 5 to 12 seconds. Those are technical system figures, not promises about how often a particular app refreshes its map.
Tracking services collect aircraft information through receiver networks and other feeds. Flightradar24 describes ADS-B as its primary GPS-based tracking technology, alongside multilateration (MLAT), UAT and satellite ADS-C. FlightAware lists terrestrial ADS-B, Aireon space-based ADS-B, air navigation service provider (ANSP) data and ACARS among its sources. The mix available for a particular aircraft depends on the service and location.
Flightradar24 reports that its network has more than 50,000 receivers and that its aircraft database contains more than 1.5 million aircraft. Those are company-reported figures on its explainer page, accessed in 2026, not independently audited statistics. FlightAware says it receives ANSP radar positions and flight-plan information in 45 countries; that provider-reported figure does not guarantee coverage for every flight or route.

How does an app connect a position to a flight and its status?
A position report alone does not tell an app everything a traveler wants to know. Services combine tracking data with context such as commercial flight plans, schedules and aircraft records. They may also use airline flight-information messages (often called FLIFO) and ANSP data about departures, arrivals, delays or traffic-flow programs. Flightradar24 and FlightAware describe different combinations of these sources in their service explanations.
After collecting the inputs, a service matches them to a flight and presents the available information in its app. The precise matching rules and data-handling timing are not published in the cited provider explanations, and can differ between services. FlightAware notes that a flight may be shown as “position-only” when the service has position reports but lacks other flight information. In that case, a plane can appear on the map while status fields are missing or incomplete.

This distinction matters when reading a status screen: a tracking position establishes where a feed reports the aircraft, but does not by itself confirm a gate assignment, cancellation, airline-published delay reason or other passenger-facing update. Those details can depend on airline, airport or aviation-authority information being available and correctly matched.
How are delay and arrival estimates produced?
Some tracking services calculate delay and arrival estimates from incoming data. FlightAware says its algorithms calculate delay and arrival estimates, but the provider pages cited here do not disclose enough detail to explain every service’s model or identify one estimate as universally most accurate.

Read “estimated” as a forecast or service calculation, not as proof that an event has happened or that the airline has confirmed a change. An actual event time is reported after the event occurs. Apps may display estimates and actual times alongside other status information, so check the label attached to a time rather than treating every displayed time as equivalent.
Why can two apps show different flight information?
Apps can disagree or update at different times because they may have different receiver coverage, access to government or ANSP feeds, airline data, and geographic reach. The aircraft’s broadcast position and an airline’s operational status are separate streams; they can arrive or be processed at different times. A service may also have a position report without the corresponding flight details.

Some operational feeds are specific to a region. For example, FAA traffic-flow information can include delay programs and real-time airline schedule updates in the United States. That US context should not be assumed to describe the data available to every app in other countries.
There is no basis in the provider information cited here for ranking one app as always faster, more complete or more accurate. When comparing services for a route, look at:

Which information should travelers rely on?
A tracking app is useful context for seeing a flight’s reported position and following an estimate, but it should not replace the operating airline’s status channel when a decision affects your trip. Check the airline’s latest instructions for operational changes and passenger guidance. The available provider explanations do not establish any one third-party service as universally authoritative or fastest.
