First-party game publishers say they review projects against changing portfolio priorities, player response, market conditions, resource needs and financial sustainability. They have not published a single industry-wide formula or standard cancellation threshold. A project may be stopped, but work can also be reprioritized or transferred while other games continue.
How a publisher evaluates a game project
Project decisions can happen at different stages, from early concept work to a game already announced or released. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) says it evaluates its games portfolio and project status against near- and long-term business priorities. That describes an ongoing review, not one final test that applies only when a game is nearly finished.
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida described one possible early decision point in a 2023 interview: “We do a prototype, we evaluate, we decide whether to spend more time and resources, or we just stop.” This is Yoshida’s account of prototyping and evaluation; it does not establish that every first-party studio uses the same process.
What factors can influence the decision?
Companies have publicly named several considerations, but have not said they are weighted equally or used in every decision. They are useful comparison axes, not a disclosed scoring rubric.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Player response and market conditions
A publisher may consider whether a game is reaching or meeting the expectations of its intended audience, as well as whether the market has changed. In a February 2024 statement, SIE CEO Hermen Hulst said that shifts in the market or industry can change a project’s plan, and that some games do not meet player expectations. SIE’s February 2024 update did not set out a numerical measure for either factor.
Portfolio and franchise fit
A game is considered in the context of the publisher’s broader plans: which projects support near-term priorities, which contribute to longer-term aims, and where the publisher wants to invest. In June 2026, SIE said it had reviewed Bungie’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs and role in the broader portfolio. Such statements identify areas considered, not the relative weight assigned to each.

Resources and financial sustainability
Staffing, cost structure and the capacity to support a project can affect how a publisher allocates work. Hulst has also described sustainable finances as important in a challenged economic environment, while affirming a role for creative experimentation and new intellectual property. A resource decision may change who works on a project or where development sits without ending every game involved.
What the public examples show
| Case | Publicly stated decision or status | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Concord and Firewalk Studios | In October 2024, SIE said it had taken Concord offline, explored options for several months, and decided to permanently sunset the game and close Firewalk Studios. Hulst cited a competitive, evolving PvP shooter market and said the game had not hit its targets. | A game can move through an interim response and review before a permanent sunset and studio closure. SIE did not disclose the targets, player counts, sales figures or internal alternatives. |
| Bungie | In August 2024, Sony said Bungie would focus resources, including staff, on Destiny 2 and Marathon. Sony also described integrating back-office functions and transferring other functions and development of different kinds of titles to PlayStation Studios. In June 2026, SIE said it had considered alternatives before concluding a workforce reduction was necessary. | Portfolio and workforce decisions can redistribute work and capacity rather than amounting to a simple continue-or-cancel choice for every project. |
| Xbox studio changes | In an employee update dated September 22, 2026, Xbox said Bethesda would expand to include Obsidian, with current projects continuing, and that Playground and Turn 10 would combine around Forza and Fable. The update also described divestitures and consultations as separate matters. | Regrouping studios, continuing projects, divesting studios and consulting on possible closures are distinct actions that can coexist. |
These are examples of companies’ stated rationales and announced plans, not complete accounts of internal deliberations. For the Bungie earnings discussion, Sony’s Q&A is an English summary of a Japanese-language session and says it is not intended as a direct translation.

Why a studio change does not automatically mean a game is canceled
Project and organizational decisions are related, but not interchangeable. A publisher may close a studio and sunset its game, as SIE announced for Firewalk and Concord. In other circumstances, it may move work or functions to another studio, reorganize teams around franchises, or change a studio’s ownership while projects continue. Check what the company has actually announced about the game itself rather than treating every restructuring as a cancellation.

Public announcements offer selected reasons, not a full account of the decision process. The cited statements do not establish a shared cross-publisher framework, a standard numeric budget limit, a quantified success threshold, or the proportion of first-party projects that get canceled. A company’s explanation can show which factors it chose to disclose, but it cannot establish the complete internal weighting or alternatives considered.
