Feature flags let an application decide at runtime whether to expose a capability, and to whom. A team can deploy code without enabling it for everyone: a flag evaluates a configured rule against a user, service, or other context, then the application follows the matching code path. Gradual rollouts and kill switches use the same mechanism, but neither makes a release safe by itself; they depend on a valid fallback, reliable evaluation context, monitoring, and clear operational ownership.

How a feature flag works

A feature flag is a conditional decision in application logic. The code asks a flag client for a value using a flag key and an evaluation context. The configured rules determine whether the feature is enabled or which variant applies, and the application runs the corresponding branch.

  1. Deploy the code. Both the new and existing paths may be present in the application, but deployment alone does not mean users can access the new capability.
  2. Evaluate the flag. The client evaluates the flag for a context, such as a user, service, or application.
  3. Apply the result. The application follows the enabled, disabled, or variant-specific path.
  4. Change exposure through configuration. Depending on the flag system, rules or rollout settings can change without redeploying the application code.

Implementations differ. Evaluation can happen in different places, and configuration delivery, caching, offline behavior, default values, and propagation delays are implementation-specific. A flag is therefore not a universal guarantee of an immediate or successful rollback.

How targeting decides who qualifies

Targeting answers which contexts should receive a feature. Rules may use fields such as a user ID, subscription plan, region, or application context, but available fields and comparison operators depend on the flag system and the context supplied to it. OpenFeature calls the subject identifier used in evaluation the targeting key; it can be a unique ID, a hash of an attribute, or a service or application hostname. Many systems use it for consistent percentage assignment, and some providers may require it. See OpenFeature’s evaluation context documentation.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Unleash documents one example of how targeting rules combine: a flag can have multiple activation strategies, and at least one matching strategy enables it (OR logic). Within a strategy, all configured constraints must match (AND logic). Constraints can test standard or custom context fields. This is Unleash’s model, not a universal rule for all flag systems. See Unleash’s activation-strategy documentation.

Keep evaluation context deliberate

Context is useful only if the application supplies it consistently and the flag system can evaluate it. Avoid sending personal data that is not needed for a decision. Consider pseudonymous stable identifiers, and check how the provider handles or persists context data; OpenFeature notes that hooks can help restrict, filter, or anonymize it. OpenFeature’s guidance on evaluation context explains the role and privacy implications of these fields.

How percentage rollouts work—and why stickiness matters

A percentage rollout selects a cohort from the eligible population; it is not necessarily a fresh random decision on every request. To keep a user in the same cohort across evaluations, systems can assign them using a stable context identifier and a stickiness configuration.

In Unleash’s documented model, a normalized MurmurHash of a unique ID supports consistent percentage distribution. The selected context field and strategy group ID feed the assignment hash. If the percentage increases, included subjects remain included and additional subjects join; reducing it removes subjects above the new threshold. Returning to an earlier percentage restores the earlier cohort if the group ID and context remain unchanged. These mechanics are specific to Unleash. See Unleash’s stickiness documentation.

Choose an identifier that matches the experience

  • Stable user ID: Use when assignment should persist across sessions and devices, provided it is available and handled appropriately.
  • Session ID: Can suit anonymous use, but preserves assignment only for that session.
  • No stable identifier: In Unleash’s default behavior, when neither userId nor sessionId is available, assignment may be random and stickiness is not guaranteed.

For migrations between old and new services or data paths, consistent context at every evaluation point matters. Unleash recommends stable user IDs where available. A change in the identifier or evaluation context can change assignment, even if the rollout percentage has not changed. See Unleash’s migration guide.

Variants and experiments

A basic flag returns an enabled or disabled result. A variant-capable flag can select among alternatives. In Unleash’s A/B testing guide, a variant has a name, a weight, and an optional payload. The rollout percentage sets the eligible population; variant weights divide that population among the alternatives. Teams can measure outcomes and decide whether to make a variant broadly available. See Unleash’s A/B testing guide.

Assignment mechanics are not the same as sound experimental design. A flag system’s ability to distribute variants does not, by itself, establish adequate sample size, statistical significance, or causal validity.

When a flag can act as a kill switch

A kill switch is an operational flag that disables or reroutes a capability when a problem appears. For example, Unleash describes using a migration flag to choose between a new service path and a legacy monolith. If the legacy path remains usable, switching the flag can route requests back without redeploying the interception layer. Unleash calls this a kill switch for the capability in its migration guide.

That rollback works only if the fallback path exists, the flag is evaluated where it can control the relevant request, and the updated configuration reaches that evaluation point. The speed and reliability depend on the implementation; a flag is not a universal service-level guarantee. Nor can it undo irreversible changes: Unleash’s guide cautions that final removal of legacy data cannot be reversed by a flag and should follow verification.

Make the switch operationally useful

  • Keep the fallback path available and test that it actually works.
  • Monitor the new path and decide in advance which signals should pause or disable its rollout.
  • Know where evaluation happens and how configuration changes propagate in your system.
  • Assign an owner authorized to act on the signal and change the flag.

Some products offer automated safeguards. For example, Unleash documents safeguards that monitor Prometheus-compatible metrics and may pause a rollout or disable an environment when a threshold is crossed. That is a product capability, not a feature guaranteed by all flag systems.

What to compare when choosing a flag system

For a real comparison, assess the mechanics that affect your application rather than assuming every implementation behaves alike:

  • Targeting: Which context fields and rule operators are supported?
  • Assignment: Which identifier drives cohort selection, and how does the cohort change when the percentage moves?
  • Evaluation and delivery: Where does evaluation run, and how does updated configuration reach it?
  • Privacy: What context data is sent or persisted, and what controls exist to filter or anonymize it?
  • Rollback: Is a tested fallback available, and can the flag change affect the relevant code path?

Plan to retire temporary flags

Flags can make an application harder to understand when temporary conditions become permanent branches. Treat cleanup as part of the flag lifecycle: once a decision is final, remove obsolete flag logic and its unused code paths. Unleash’s A/B testing guide, for example, instructs teams to archive the flag and clean up code after the winning variant reaches all users.
