A fanless PC cools itself by conducting heat from its processor into a heatsink or metal chassis, then releasing that heat to the surrounding air through natural convection and radiation. It removes the fan, not the need to move heat. Whether the system stays within safe operating temperatures depends on the complete thermal path, the workload, the case, and the conditions around it.

How does a fanless PC work?

Heat has to travel from the processor to a surface large enough to release it into the room. A typical path is:

  1. Processor: The CPU produces heat while it runs.
  2. Thermal interface: Thermal compound or another interface helps conduct heat from the CPU into its cooler or thermal module.
  3. Heatsink, heatpipes, or chassis: The cooling hardware conducts and spreads heat away from the processor. Some designs use copper heatpipes to carry heat to a larger surface.
  4. Room air: The outer surface releases heat through natural convection and radiation.

In some systems, a dedicated cooler transfers heat to the enclosure. In others, the enclosure itself is the heatsink. Akasa describes heat moving through a thermal module or copper heatpipes into an aluminium chassis, then out through its external fins by natural convection; that is a manufacturer’s description of its design approach, not a universal layout.

How does heat leave the case without a fan?

Air next to a warm heatsink or chassis heats up, becomes less dense, and rises. Cooler air moves in to replace it, creating a slow natural circulation. The warm surface also transfers some heat by radiation. This is less forceful than fan-driven airflow, so passive cooling relies more heavily on exposed surface area, unobstructed space around the case, and a suitable orientation.

Why fins and orientation matter

Fins increase the area of metal exposed to air. Their arrangement can help natural airflow carry heat away, but only if air can move around them. For a tower-style CPU cooler, Noctua recommends an open route for air to enter from below and leave above, with clearance over the cooler. Keep vents and fins clear, and follow the case maker’s orientation guidance.

What determines a fanless PC’s cooling capacity?

There is no single wattage or temperature limit that applies to all fanless PCs. The practical limit depends on how much heat the components produce and how effectively the particular case and cooling hardware can spread and release it.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Workload and sustained CPU heat: A processor running at high load for long periods puts more continuous heat into the cooling system than one that alternates between work and idle. Noctua says its NH-P1 passive cooler is better suited to mixed, non-continuous workloads than prolonged full-load use. That is guidance for this cooler and configuration, not a general threshold for all fanless computers.
  • Case design and clearance: Compact cases, blocked vents, or noise-insulation panels can restrict natural convection. Check the chosen system’s cooling guidance and leave the specified space around its vents and fins.
  • Ambient temperature: A warmer room reduces the temperature difference available to carry heat away. Noctua’s NH-P1 compatibility recommendations assume an ambient temperature of 22°C and state that performance will be worse at higher ambient temperatures. This is a condition for those recommendations, not a universal operating limit.
  • Other components: A discrete GPU adds heat and can obstruct airflow. Motherboard voltage-regulator modules (VRMs) also need suitable cooling; without airflow from a CPU fan, their heatsinks and placement matter.
  • Installation and orientation: Poor contact between the CPU and cooler, an unsuitable mounting arrangement, or a case orientation that impedes convection can undermine the thermal path.

Akasa’s 2026 technical article gives vendor-stated examples of 35W for its compact Mini-ITX fanless cases and 65W for the Pascal MX. These are model-specific case thermal ceilings, not a rule for other fanless PCs; Akasa says actual results also depend on sustained processor power, ambient temperature, orientation, and airflow past the fins.

Fully passive or semi-passive cooling?

A fully passive system has no fan in its cooling path. A semi-passive setup can use a fan when extra cooling headroom is needed. Noctua says the NH-P1 can be used with an optional low-speed fan; check the specific cooler and system guidance for compatibility.

Consideration Fully passive Semi-passive
Cooling-system noise No cooling fan noise; other components may still make noise. A fan can add noise when it runs; other components may also make noise.
Cooling headroom Relies on heatsink or chassis geometry and natural convection. A fan can add cooling headroom when needed.
Workload fit Depends on the system’s thermal capacity; the NH-P1 guide favors mixed, intermittent loads over prolonged full CPU load. May suit a build that needs additional cooling capacity, subject to the cooler’s compatibility and configuration guidance.
Dust intake No fan-driven intake, but the enclosure is not automatically dust-tight. Fan operation can draw air and dust into the system.

What to check before choosing a fanless PC

  • Confirm the exact CPU, motherboard or socket, and cooler are supported by the case or cooler manufacturer.
  • Check the case’s stated thermal rating and the conditions attached to it; do not treat another model’s rating as a general CPU limit.
  • Make sure the cooler and case can be installed in an orientation that supports natural convection, with the recommended clearance above and around them.
  • Account for heat from a discrete GPU and verify that the motherboard VRMs have adequate cooling without relying on CPU-fan airflow.
  • Consider your actual workload and room temperature, especially if the CPU will run under sustained heavy load.
  • If fanless operation is not essential, check whether the specific cooler supports a semi-passive fan option for additional headroom.

For a dedicated passive CPU cooler, Noctua’s NH-P1 uses six heatpipes and thick, widely spaced fins designed for natural convection. Noctua warns that it is not suitable for CPUs that create high heat loads and recommends checking CPU compatibility and the full system setup. For a fanless case, verify its supported hardware, thermal rating, installation orientation, and operating conditions. Thermal compound supports the connection between CPU and cooler; it is not a substitute for an appropriately sized cooling system.

Does fanless cooling mean no maintenance or failures?

Removing fans eliminates their noise and reduces dust drawn in by forced airflow. It does not make a PC dust-proof, silent in every respect, or immune to failure: storage, power supplies, and other components can still make noise or fail. ASUS describes reduced dust intake as a benefit of its fanless NUC design, while Akasa cautions that less dust does not mean a dust-tight enclosure. If dust protection matters, check the specific system’s ingress-protection rating rather than inferring it from the absence of fans.
