Attackers collected exposed .env files from at least 110,000 domains, then used cloud credentials found in some files to access cloud environments, search for more exposed files, and extort multiple organizations. The 110,000 figure counts domains with files collected—not confirmed victims. Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 reported more than 230 million unique scan targets, but did not publish a count of compromised or extorted organizations.

How did exposed .env files lead to cloud extortion?

An .env file stores environment variables used to configure an application. Those variables may include cloud access keys, database logins, SaaS API keys, and other sensitive details. If a web server or deployment setup makes the file publicly accessible, anyone who finds it may be able to read those values.

Unit 42 described a campaign in which attackers obtained AWS IAM access keys from exposed .env files and used them to enter cloud accounts. The sequence was:

  1. A web application or server exposed an .env file through a public path.
  2. The file revealed configuration details and, in some cases, cloud or other service credentials.
  3. Attackers used exposed AWS keys to inspect and access cloud accounts.
  4. Long-lived keys and overly broad IAM permissions could give attackers time and authority to act beyond the initial access.
  5. Attackers used cloud infrastructure and automated scanning to look for more exposed files.
  6. In compromised cloud storage, attackers exfiltrated and deleted data, then left ransom notes.

Unit 42 says attackers did not encrypt data before demanding a ransom. This was an extortion operation involving data theft and ransom notes, not a reported encryption-based ransomware attack. The report attributes the initial exposure to organizations’ misconfigured applications, not to a vulnerability or misconfiguration in a cloud provider’s services.

What does the 110,000-domain figure mean?

The figures describe different stages and should not be treated as interchangeable. Unit 42’s 2024 report gives these campaign measurements:

Measure What Unit 42 reported What it does—and does not—show
Unique scan targets More than 230 million Targets scanned, not confirmed compromised environments.
Domains with files collected At least 110,000 Domains from which attackers collected exposed .env files; not a count of confirmed victims or extortion payments.
Unique combinations of leaked environment variables More than 90,000 Not all combinations necessarily contained an account or secret, though each exposed some internal detail.
Cloud-service variables 7,000 A variable count, not a count of verified working credentials or breached accounts.
Social-media platform variables 1,515 A variable count, not a count of confirmed account takeovers.
Organizations successfully compromised and extorted Multiple; count not stated by Unit 42 The report does not name the organizations or quantify the number.

Unit 42 did not test whether each credential it enumerated was valid. It assessed with high confidence that attackers likely used some stolen secrets for further activity, and reported successful compromise and extortion of multiple organizations. The public account does not establish that every exposed file held a usable secret, every scanned target was breached, or every domain with a collected file belonged to an extortion victim.

Was AWS vulnerable?

Unit 42’s account does not describe an AWS service vulnerability. The entry point was credentials exposed by victim organizations’ web applications. Those credentials could then be used against cloud accounts, particularly where permissions were excessive or keys remained valid for a long time. An incident involving AWS resources is not, by itself, evidence that AWS’s services were breached.

An AWS spokesperson quoted in the Unit 42 report said: “Environment variable files should never be publicly exposed, and even if kept private, should never contain AWS credentials.” The distinction matters: keeping a configuration file off the public web reduces exposure, while avoiding long-lived cloud credentials in that file reduces the damage if it is disclosed through another route.

How can organizations prevent exposed cloud credentials?

Unit 42’s recommendations address separate points in the attack chain: preventing public file access, reducing credential usefulness, limiting permissions, and improving detection. They are security practices, not a replacement for current AWS documentation or an environment-specific review.

Keep configuration files out of public paths

  • Keep .env files and secrets outside directories that a web server can serve.
  • Review web-server and deployment configuration to ensure environment files cannot be downloaded through a public URL.
  • Avoid putting AWS credentials in environment files, including files kept private.

Reduce credential lifetime and scope

  • Prefer temporary credentials or IAM roles where appropriate, rather than long-lived access keys.
  • Apply least privilege so each identity can perform only the actions its job requires.
  • Restrict sensitive IAM actions—such as creating roles or attaching policies—to identities that genuinely need them.

Make cloud activity observable

  • Enable and retain CloudTrail and relevant service logs.
  • Monitor for anomalous API activity, unexpected IAM changes, unusual resource creation, and large data transfers.
  • Where operations allow, disable AWS regions that are not in use; Unit 42 noted attackers deployed resources across regions.

Unit 42’s 2025 Global Incident Response Report also recommends strict IAM controls, short-lived credentials, centralized logging, and alerts for unusual API calls or data transfers. Together, these controls help reduce both the chance that a leaked key can be used and the time an attacker can operate undetected.

What to do if an .env file or cloud key was exposed

An exposed file should be treated as a potential credential incident, even if there is no evidence yet that someone used it. The campaign report does not provide a universal response procedure, but its described attack path points to the immediate areas an organization should investigate:

  • Check CloudTrail and relevant service logs for unusual API calls, IAM changes, resource creation, cross-region activity, and large transfers.
  • Investigate cloud storage for unexpected access, data movement, deletion, or ransom notes.
