ETH Zurich researchers have taught an anthropomorphic robotic hand to use its fingers as legs: the fingers support and move the hand, then can also interact with objects. The experimental prototype carries its own power and computing, and its demonstrations include crawling, recovering from some falls, and performing limited tasks. It is not a commercially available robot or a general-purpose autonomous explorer.

What lets the hand walk on its fingers?

The central idea is to give the hand’s existing fingers a second job. Rather than relying on a separate set of wheels or legs, the hand places and moves its fingers to support and propel its body. Those same fingers remain available for manipulation. As the researchers put it, “A walking robotic hand must use the same fingers to move its body, support its weight, and interact with the environment.” The team describes its approach in the September 15, 2026 arXiv preprint “Fingers as Legs: Learning Self-Supported Locomotion and Manipulation with an Anthropomorphic Hand”.

For the reported demonstrations, the platform was untethered: it carried onboard power and computing. Fast Company reports that the hardware pack included a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, an inertial measurement unit and a lithium-polymer battery. The preprint confirms onboard power and computation but does not specify component models; the researcher’s September 2026 post identifies the hand as an off-the-shelf WUJI hand and names NVIDIA Isaac Lab as the simulation-training environment. Fast Company’s report and the researcher’s post provide those hardware details.

How the team taught it to move

The researchers trained control policies in a simulator calibrated using measurements from the physical hand. They accounted for the fingers’ unequal lengths rather than treating them as identical legs. The learned controllers work with the hand’s existing finger design and position controller, according to the preprint.

This is not one all-purpose system that independently sees, plans and handles any situation. The preprint describes task-specific behaviors, with different feedback available for different demonstrations.

What the demonstrations show

Crawling, steering and fall recovery

The preprint describes untethered crawling, steering and recovery after a fall. Futura-Sciences reports that the prototype operated on 14 indoor and outdoor surfaces. That is a reported demonstration figure, not a comprehensive terrain benchmark. The same article reports recovery in 21 of 25 trials after the hand was placed on its side; that small test does not establish a general recovery rate. See Futura-Sciences’ October 5, 2026 report.

UNCLE BRICK Technical Robotic Hand Building Blocks Kit,Equipped with 4 Motors and Can Be Remotely Controlled,Set for Aged 8-14 and Aldult,Suitable As A Holiday Or Birthday Gift for Children(1622 PCS)
  • UNCLE BRICK introduces a brand new building block set——Technical Robotic Hand Building Blocks Kit,This building block set contains 1622 pieces. It also includes 4 M motors and a main control system that drives them.
  • This robot's fingers can freely tighten and loosen according to your control. The thumb, index finger, and middle finger can independently control the opening of the fingers, while the ring finger and little finger are connected together.
  • You can control him to make various gestures. Since he's made up of 1622 blocks, he looks quite large, nearly 18 inches tall including the base, making it undoubtedly a very rewarding challenge. His palm also contains a component with a light source.
  • When you complete it, it will be a piece of art worthy of your praise. You can show it to your friends how you play with it. After all, among many static building block sets, it is unique, allowing you to manipulate it at will.
  • This robotic arm building block set comes in a beautiful gift box, perfect if you're considering gifting it to your son or daughter, or even a friend,Then he will be the gift you can best present. It presents a significant challenge, and Uncle Brick recommends that the child be 8 years or older to assemble this toy.

Pressing keyboard keys

The hand can support its own weight while issuing successive keyboard commands, and the preprint says this keyboard interaction was performed without vision. Fast Company reports that it pressed arrow keys 29 times out of 32 in a Sokoban demonstration. That figure describes the reported demo, not a broad measure of keyboard reliability.

Pushing an object

The researchers also demonstrated pushing an object toward targets. Unlike the keyboard task, this behavior used overhead visual feedback, according to the preprint. The different feedback conditions matter: the demonstrations do not show that the hand performs both tasks through the same vision-free control setup.

What the “secret feature” really means

There is no hidden commercial feature. The notable design choice is that the fingers do double duty: they move and support the platform, then manipulate things around it. Onboard power and computing let the prototype perform its reported demonstrations without a tether, while learned control helps coordinate the fingers for the distinct tasks.

The researcher’s post notes that the hand drifts to the right without steering. That detail is a reminder that locomotion is a controlled behavior, not evidence of unrestricted autonomous navigation. The available descriptions do not establish a like-for-like competing system or a product-level performance comparison.

Could it work in a confined space?

The researchers envision a larger robot deploying a mobile hand into a confined workspace to operate controls or move objects, then retrieving it. That is a proposed future application, not a field deployment demonstrated in the reported work. The cited coverage also does not show automatic detachment and reconnection. In practical terms, the prototype points toward a possible way to bring a hand-shaped tool to a task when a full robot cannot easily reach it; it does not yet establish that a robot can routinely deploy and recover one on its own.
