Those are separate propagation methods—not proof that every infection used the same route. CISA and MS-ISAC documented these behaviors by 2020, but the available evidence does not establish when Emotet first gained them.
How did Emotet get onto a network?
CISA and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) describe phishing emails as Emotet’s principal initial delivery route. A message could carry a malicious attachment or link; a user interaction would launch the payload. Emotet was modular and could download or deliver additional malware, so the first infection could lead to a broader compromise rather than remain a standalone Trojan incident. CISA and MS-ISAC’s Emotet advisory, revised October 24, 2020, describes these behaviors.
How did Emotet spread from one computer to others?
After running on a compromised system, Emotet attempted to move through the organization’s network. CISA and MS-ISAC describe credential guessing and use of valid local accounts to reach remote services, including SMB and Windows administrative shares. The malware could then write to shared drives. A weak or reused password and broadly accessible shared resources could therefore give it opportunities to reach additional systems.
The advisory also records Emotet exploiting SMB through a vulnerability such as ETERNALBLUE (MS17-010). That is a distinct, observed technique: credential guessing and writing to shared drives do not require the same condition as exploiting a software vulnerability. The advisory does not say that every Emotet infection used ETERNALBLUE or another SMB exploit.

Why was Emotet described as worm-like?
CISA and MS-ISAC used “worm-like” to describe Emotet’s ability to propagate across networks. The term captures the potential for an infection to spread beyond the computer where a user first opened a phishing attachment or link. It does not mean that phishing, password guessing, shared-drive use, and SMB exploitation were one identical mechanism.
The scale of activity was significant, but one cited figure needs careful interpretation: CISA’s EINSTEIN Intrusion Detection System generated roughly 16,000 Emotet-related alerts during increased activity beginning in July 2020. That is an alert count, not a count of confirmed infections or victims, according to the CISA and MS-ISAC advisory.

When were Emotet’s network-spreading capabilities added?
The available sources document Emotet’s network propagation by 2019–2020, but do not establish when the capability was first introduced. The article title’s wording should not be read as evidence of a particular release date or a newly added feature. In a December 19, 2019, presentation, the HHS Office of Information Security reproduced this US-CERT assessment: “Emotet continues to be among the most costly and destructive malware affecting state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) governments, and the private and public sectors.” The quote appears in the HHS Emotet Update.

No single measure guarantees that malware cannot move laterally. The controls recommended by CISA and MS-ISAC, alongside Microsoft’s guidance, focus on reducing exposure and limiting what a compromised account or endpoint can reach.

- hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
- Restrict lateral traffic: Limit unnecessary communication between endpoints. Microsoft recommends preventing RPC and SMB communication among endpoints where possible.
- Segment the network: Separate systems and restrict traffic between segments so that one compromised device has fewer paths to others.
- Apply least privilege: Give accounts only the access they need. Use strong, randomized local administrator passwords, as Microsoft recommends.
- Secure file sharing: Disable file and printer sharing when it is not needed. When sharing is required, use strong passwords or Active Directory authentication.
- Strengthen account protection: Use multifactor authentication where available, especially for privileged access.
- Filter suspicious email: Use email gateway filtering to reduce the chance that a malicious attachment or link reaches a user.
- Use workstation firewalls: Restrict inbound connections that are not necessary for normal work.
These recommendations are detailed in the CISA and MS-ISAC advisory and Microsoft’s Emotet threat description.
