The biggest avoidable risks are sharp pressure on the display and debris trapped between the two halves when you close the phone. Keep the original inner-screen protector in place, check the screen before folding, clean it gently, and follow the exact model’s guidance for water, dust, and repairs.
What makes a foldable screen different?
A foldable inner display is a flexible assembly, not simply rigid cover glass that happens to bend. Samsung describes its foldable display as a stack that includes a protective film, a protective layer, and Ultra Thin Glass. That is Samsung’s explanation of its own display design; it should not be assumed to describe every brand or model. Samsung’s display and protective-film guide was last updated August 2, 2022.
The flexibility also means the screen surface can be more vulnerable to concentrated pressure and sharp objects than traditional phone screens. Is the crease normal, or is the screen damaged?
A visible bend or wrinkle around the center fold can be part of the design. Samsung says wrinkles may be visible around its folding area, so the presence of a crease alone does not establish that the screen is damaged. A heavy impact, by contrast, can cause spots, lines, or cracks, according to Samsung.

Pay attention to changes in function and signs of impact rather than treating every visible crease as a defect. If the display develops a new line, spot, crack, touch problem, or other change, consult the manufacturer’s support or an authorized service provider for the exact model.
How to care for a foldable screen
Before you fold it
- Check the inner screen and hinge area before closing the phone.
- Do not fold the phone over a card, coin, key, crumb, grain of sand, or other object. A small item trapped between the halves can concentrate pressure on the flexible display.
Samsung’s foldable-device precautions and Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold safety guide both warn about pressure or foreign material damaging flexible screens.

Use light, fingertip pressure
- Use a fingertip rather than a fingernail, pen, key, or other sharp tool.
- Avoid forceful pressing, especially near the fold. Do not use an object to push or scrape the display.
Leave the inner-screen protector in place
The preinstalled protector is part of the device’s intended screen assembly. Do not peel it off or add an unapproved third-party film. Samsung directs customers to authorized service for protector replacement; Google also warns against peeling back the supplied film or installing a third-party protector. If the protector bubbles or lifts, stop picking at it and check the replacement instructions for your exact model.

Clean gently
Start with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Motorola recommends a dry soft cloth for the Razr Fold screen and warns against spraying cleaner directly onto it. Google recommends a dry cloth for dust and smudges and provides additional model-specific cleaning guidance. Do not assume that a cleaning or disinfecting product permitted for one brand is safe for another. Follow your phone’s instructions, turn it off when those instructions say to, and keep moisture away from ports and openings.

Can foldable phones get wet or dusty?
There is no single water- or dust-resistance rule for all foldables. Check the exact model’s rating and instructions, and treat any rating as a limited test result rather than a promise that the phone is waterproof or dustproof. Protection can decline with wear, repair, disassembly, or damage.

Avoid intentional submersion, salt water, and other liquids unless the official documentation for your specific model explicitly addresses them. If a phone gets wet, follow its manufacturer’s instructions before using or charging it.
How long do foldable screens last?
The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a portfolio-wide real-world lifespan, failure rate, or typical number of folds before a screen fails. That means a precise promise such as “it will last a certain number of years” cannot be responsibly applied to foldables as a category. Durability depends on the specific model and how it is used, and a published ingress rating does not answer how long the display will last.
When comparing two specific models, look for manufacturer information about the display layers and protector replacement, the exact ingress rating and its stated limits, and the care and service terms available in your country. A durability test is useful only when its tester, model, method, and limitations are clear; the manufacturer guidance cited here does not provide a controlled comparison that can rank brands.
