They are not presented as a separate tarot deck. The game’s Steam listing currently gives October 2026 as its planned release month and lists a free demo, so check the store page for current availability.
How the card-based conversation system works
As you explore the train and learn about its passengers, objects, and mysteries, those discoveries are recorded as knowledge cards. The game organizes them in an album by topic. You choose cards to take with you, then try them in conversations or at other obstacles.
GamesRadar’s September 14, 2026 hands-on report describes a dialogue check in which using a personal card before speaking to a passenger allowed the conversation to continue and revealed another finding. Prompts above characters can suggest topics to investigate; changing your selected cards and testing combinations is part of working out what a passenger may respond to.
That makes the cards function like a knowledge inventory and conversational key. What matters is what you have discovered and whether it is relevant to the person or barrier in front of you—not whether you have drawn a fortune from a conventional tarot deck.

What this means for investigating the train
The basic loop links exploration to conversation: investigate a place or object, add what you learn to your album, then decide which knowledge might help with a passenger or obstacle. A new card can therefore do more than document progress; selecting it may reveal a route into a conversation that was previously closed.
The Steam description presents the story as allowing more than one approach, saying, “There is never only one right answer — this is your story.” That is the developer’s promotional framing, rather than an independent assessment of how many outcomes the finished game supports. The store also describes the train as a place where “Behind every door lies a mystery and every passenger has a story to tell.”

What Dreadline Express is and where to try it
Steam describes Dreadline Express as a first-person psychological horror adventure and metroidbrainia aboard the “last human train,” where a small group of survivors and their mysteries await. It is developed by David Konecny, published by Shoreline Games, and listed as a single-player Windows PC game.
As of the Steam listing checked October 7, 2026, the full game was not yet available and had October 2026 as its planned release month. Steam lists a free demo released June 15, 2026, described as the player’s first moments aboard the train. Because the planned release month is already underway, check the full-game Steam listing and demo listing for the current status before planning to play.
