To upload a file by dragging it into a website, drop it on a page area designed to accept files; the site reads the files from the drop event and sends them to its upload service. If you are building that feature, keep a regular file picker alongside the drop zone, read files in the drop handler, and validate them on the server before accepting them.
What happens when you drop a file
Browser drag-and-drop uses a drag source, transferred data, and a drop target. For a file upload, the source is usually your operating system’s file manager and the target is an area on a web page. The browser exposes the dropped files through a DataTransfer object; the site can then pass those files to its upload endpoint. MDN’s HTML Drag and Drop API guide describes the browser interface and its distinct uses, including dragging data into a page.
Dropping a file does not itself upload it. It gives the page access to a File or FileList; the site still needs to check the files and transmit them.
How to build a drop zone
A dependable implementation layers drag-and-drop onto a standard file input. That gives people a way to choose files through the browser picker instead of dragging, which is essential for keyboard users and useful whenever dragging is unavailable or inconvenient. MDN’s file-drag-and-drop guide recommends backing the drop zone with an <input type="file">.

1. Provide a labeled file input
Make the drop area visible and explain what it accepts. Include a clearly labeled file input, and configure it for the intended file types and whether multiple files are allowed. The input should remain usable without drag-and-drop.
2. Handle drag events on the target
Listen for dragenter and dragover to indicate that the target can receive a file—for example, by changing its appearance. In the dragover handler, prevent the browser’s default behavior and set the drop effect so the user receives appropriate feedback. A target that does not handle the relevant defaults may not accept a drop as intended. See MDN’s drag-operations guide.

3. Read files in the drop handler
Handle the drop event and obtain the files from event.dataTransfer.files. This property is a read-only FileList. If processing individual data-transfer items, DataTransferItem.getAsFile() can return a file.
A common reason event.dataTransfer.files appears empty is checking it during dragenter or dragover. The browser protects the drag data store during most drag events, so the files are available in the drop handler. MDN documents this behavior for DataTransfer.files.

After extraction and validation, send accepted files to the application’s upload endpoint, commonly using the File API with multipart/form-data. Security checks belong on the server
Client-side validation is not a security boundary: a user can bypass or alter it. The server should enforce authorization, size limits, content validation, and storage policy before accepting or making a file available. Do not trust a filename or client-supplied MIME type as proof of file contents. The exact checks depend on what the application stores and how uploaded files are used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Native code, an uploader component, or a managed service?
Native browser APIs provide the interaction primitives, not a complete upload product. A component or managed service may provide more of the interface or infrastructure, but the right choice depends on the application’s requirements.

| Decision area | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Access and interaction | Keyboard use, assistive-technology support, and a working file-picker fallback. |
| File handling | Accepted types, multiple-file behavior, validation, and the clarity of error messages. |

| Infrastructure | Storage-provider integration, virus scanning, and content processing. |
| Operational fit | Privacy and compliance requirements, bundle size, and ongoing maintenance cost. |
There is no single best option across these criteria. A small, purpose-built flow may suit a simple upload form; applications with demanding reliability or processing needs may benefit from a higher-level component or service, provided it meets their accessibility, security, and privacy requirements.
What drag-and-drop does—and does not—transfer
File uploading is the “data into a page” use of drag-and-drop. The API can transfer serialized data or file objects, but it does not directly move arbitrary JavaScript objects between unrelated pages. MDN’s API overview explains the different drag-and-drop use cases.
