The northern Baltic—here, the Gulf of Bothnia, especially Bothnian Bay and Bothnian Sea—is generally fresher, colder in winter, and more affected by sea ice than the central Baltic, or Baltic Proper. The central Baltic’s deeper basins have stronger, more persistent salinity layering, which can limit oxygen replenishment at depth. These are regional patterns, not rules for every place or season.
Which areas count as northern and central Baltic?
“Northern Baltic” and “central Baltic” are informal regional labels. This comparison uses the Gulf of Bothnia—including Bothnian Bay and Bothnian Sea—for the north, and the Baltic Proper for the central region. Conditions also vary within each basin, so a measurement from northern Bothnian Bay should not be treated as representative of the entire Gulf of Bothnia.
Why is the northern Baltic less salty?
Freshwater from rivers and precipitation lowers salinity toward the north and east. HELCOM’s 2023 assessment reports surface salinity of about 0–2 psu in northern and eastern Baltic regions, compared with about 7–8 psu in the Baltic Proper. A Finnish marine information service gives a slightly broader local figure—about 0–3 parts per thousand—for the innermost Bothnian Bay. These figures describe different regional scopes and should not be read as competing measurements. (HELCOM, 2023) (Finnish marine information service)
Salinity also changes with depth. Denser, saltier water entering from the southwest tends to lie beneath fresher surface water. The difference between surface and deep water is especially persistent in central basins, where it forms a halocline—a layer that restricts vertical exchange.

How do layering and oxygen differ?
Bothnian Bay: less persistent salinity layering
The Åland Sea’s shallow threshold area, reported at roughly 60–70 metres deep by the Finnish marine information service, restricts the entry of dense saline deep water into Bothnian Bay. As a result, the bay lacks the strong, permanent salinity stratification typical of central basins. Seasonal temperature layers can still form, but autumn cooling may mix the water column down to the bottom. (Finnish marine information service)
Baltic Proper: deep water can become oxygen-depleted
In central Baltic basins, the persistent halocline can limit the mixing that would otherwise replenish deep water with oxygen. Oxygen is consumed by biological and chemical processes, so isolated deep water can become depleted. This is a risk associated with basin structure and stratification, not a claim that every deep location is oxygen-poor at all times.

The northern basin is not immune to oxygen change
HELCOM reports that salinity stratification in Bothnian Bay has strengthened as surface salinity has decreased, and that reduced deep-water ventilation may contribute to declining near-bottom oxygen. Its indicator assessment found good shallow-water oxygen status in Bothnian Bay, Quark, and Bothnian Sea for 2016–2021; that finding does not guarantee conditions in every deep area or in later years. (HELCOM oxygen indicator assessment)
How do temperature and sea ice differ?
The north is more affected by winter cold and sea ice, but summer water can still become warm, especially at the surface. The Finnish Meteorological Institute reports average warmest-water temperatures of about 14–15 °C in northern Bothnian Bay and 16–18 °C in its southern part. Calm, sunny weather can push surface water above 20 °C around the Baltic, so a short-lived warm reading does not contradict the regional averages. (Finnish Meteorological Institute, 2025-11-05)

HELCOM’s 2024 climate fact sheet identifies winter warming and declining ice extent and thickness as especially pronounced in Bothnian Bay and Bothnian Sea. These changes affect ecosystems and human activities. HELCOM cites reduced ringed seal breeding success as an expected ecological effect; it is a projection, not a uniform measured outcome for every season or location. (HELCOM, 2024)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the contrast mean for ecosystems?
Lower salinity in the northern Gulf of Bothnia favors freshwater-adapted organisms and changes the balance between freshwater and marine species. The more saline brackish conditions of the Baltic Proper support a different balance. Salinity is only one influence on ecosystem composition; temperature, oxygen, habitats, and local conditions matter too. (HELCOM)
