The batter may try for first only if first base is empty or there are two outs; whether a runner who reaches home scores depends on how the inning’s third out is made.
When can the batter run on a dropped third strike?
Under MLB rules, an uncaught third strike lets the batter become a runner when first base is unoccupied, or when first is occupied and there are two outs. If first is occupied with fewer than two outs, the batter is out and cannot run to first under this rule. The ball remains live, so eligible runners—including a runner on third—may try to advance.
MLB Rule 5.05(a)(2) states that the batter may run when “the third strike called by the umpire is not caught, providing (1) first base is unoccupied, or (2) first base is occupied with two out.” These conditions govern the batter’s chance to reach first; they do not guarantee a run.
When does the run count?
A runner must legally advance through the bases and touch home before the third out. The key question is not simply whether the runner crossed the plate, but what kind of out ended the inning.

- The third out is a force out: The run does not count, even if the runner touched home before the defense completed the out. On a dropped-third-strike play, this can happen when the defense retires a runner forced to advance.
- The third out is the batter-runner out before first: The run does not count.
- The third out is a tag out that is not a force: A runner who legally touched home before that out can score.
- A preceding runner is called out for missing a base: The run does not count.
MLB Rule 5.08(a) gives the general test: “One run shall be scored each time a runner legally advances to and touches first, second, third and home base before three men are put out to end the inning,” subject to the listed exceptions.
How the situations play out
| Situation | Can the batter run? | Can a runner from third score? |
|---|---|---|
| First base is empty | Yes, if the third strike is uncaught. | Yes, if the runner legally touches home and the third out does not erase the run. |
| First occupied, fewer than two outs | No. The batter is out on the uncaught third strike. | A runner may attempt to advance, but the run is subject to the third-out exceptions. |
| First occupied, two outs | Yes, if the third strike is uncaught. | Yes, but a force out as the third out cancels the run. |
For example, with a runner on third and two outs, the batter can run after an uncaught third strike. If the runner touches home before the defense tags the batter-runner out after he has reached first, the run can count because that tag is not a force. If the defense instead forces out a runner for the third out, the run is erased.

Does the batter still get a strikeout?
Yes. Under the ordinary dropped-third-strike rule, the batter is charged with a strikeout even if he reaches first safely, and the pitcher is credited with the strikeout as well. MLB’s strikeout glossary explains this scoring treatment.

MLB describes a special case for the 2026 ABS Challenge System: if a pitch initially called a ball is challenged and overturned to strike three, a catcher who drops that pitch does not give the batter the ordinary opportunity to run. The batter is out without needing a tag or force play. This exception concerns a pitch changed from ball to strike three; it is distinct from a pitch called strike three at the time.
