Doctors registered in India can use social media to share factual practice information and general health education within their expertise. But it is not a place to solicit patients, showcase impressive outcomes, post patient images or reviews, or provide individual medical care in public. A newer NMC guideline dated 6 October 2026 also needs to be checked before relying on any detailed advertising rules; its official PDF is linked below.
What doctors can post
The National Medical Commission’s 2023 Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations, Guideline 6, allow factual, verifiable information and public education within the doctor’s expertise. Written and visual communication should be truthful, respectful, and professional. Information must not mislead, deceive, or exploit a patient’s vulnerability or lack of knowledge. Read the NMC’s 2023 regulations, including Guideline 6.
- General health education: Explain health topics for the public, within your expertise. Keep the content general rather than diagnosing or treating someone who comments.
- Accurate practice information: Share factual details about your practice, services, or facilities without unsupported claims, guarantees, or comparisons suggesting superiority.
- Formal practice announcements: The NMC-hosted Code of Medical Ethics lists limited announcements, including starting a practice, changing the type or address of a practice, temporary absence, resuming or succeeding to a practice, and publicly declaring charges. Keep these announcements restrained and informational. See the Code of Medical Ethics Regulations, 2002, amended through 8 October 2016.
- Public-health commentary: Public lectures, talks, and writing on public health or hygienic living are permitted when they do not function as advertising or patient solicitation. Clause 7.11 says a physician should not contribute to lay-press articles or interviews about diseases and treatments that may advertise the physician or solicit practice, while allowing communication on public-health matters for that purpose.
Before publishing, ask whether a post is factual and verifiable, within your expertise, and genuinely educational or informational. Check that it does not exploit vulnerability, make unsupported promotional claims, or invite readers into a public consultation. This is a practical checklist drawn from the rules, not a separate NMC test.
What not to post or pay to promote
Guideline 6 identifies several social-media practices that doctors should avoid:

#1 Best Overall
- Patient-specific care in public: Do not discuss a particular patient’s treatment or prescribe through a public thread.
- Patient photographs or scans: Do not post patient photos or scan images, including CT or PET scans. The provision summarized in Guideline 6 does not state a general consent exception for social-media posts.
- Testimonials, endorsements, and reviews: Do not request or share patient recommendations, testimonials, endorsements, or reviews on social media.
- Outcome showcases: Do not share images of healed or cured patients, or images or videos of procedures displaying impressive results.
- Purchased visibility or ratings: Do not buy likes or followers, pay to have your name placed higher by search algorithms, or use fee-charging apps for higher ratings or patient solicitation.
- Self-aggrandizing publicity: Avoid attention-seeking claims about your skill, achievements, speciality, associations, or status. The Code’s advertising provisions prohibit publicity that promotes a doctor in this way or directly or indirectly solicits patients.
- Unprofessional conduct toward colleagues: Social-media behaviour toward colleagues remains subject to general medical ethics and professional-conduct principles.
How to handle a medical question in comments
A public post can explain a general health issue; it should not turn into a consultation about an identifiable person’s symptoms, diagnosis, or treatment. If someone asks for individual help in a comment, do not assess their case or prescribe there. Guideline 6 directs the RMP to move the interaction to a suitable telemedicine or in-person consultation.
For example, a doctor can reply: “I can’t assess or advise on an individual case in a public comment. Please arrange an appropriate telemedicine or in-person consultation.” The wording is an example, not a quoted NMC script.

Check the NMC’s 6 October 2026 advertising guideline
The NMC’s official 13-page guideline on ethical advertising and public communication by hospitals, medical institutions, and RMPs is linked from its What’s New page with a date of 6 October 2026. Read the full PDF before relying on detailed provisions about what practitioners or institutions may advertise, including any exceptions, commencement effects, or penalties. The materials cited here do not establish whether this guideline repeals or replaces the 2023 regulations or the 2002 Code.
A 7 October 2026 report by Medical Dialogues says the new guideline addresses AI-generated or AI-assisted content and restricts misleading, deceptive, or unverifiable representations about diagnosis, treatment, outcomes, qualifications, patient experiences, or healthcare services. That is secondary reporting; confirm the exact wording and full provision in the official PDF before relying on it.
