Video doorbells store footage on the device, a memory card or home hub, a provider’s cloud, or a combination of local and cloud storage. Where clips go determines how you access them, how long they remain available, and what happens when Wi-Fi or power fails. Security also depends on account access and sharing controls—not encryption alone.

How do video doorbells store footage?

With local storage, recordings are saved on the doorbell itself, a microSD card, or a hub in your home. With cloud storage, the doorbell uploads clips to the provider’s systems, and you view them through an account or app. Some models combine these approaches, such as by temporarily buffering event clips on the device when a network connection is unavailable.

Local storage: a model-specific example

For the eufy Video Doorbell C31/C30, eufy says event recordings are encrypted using AES-256 and transferred to a microSD card or compatible HomeBase 2 or 3. The C31/C30 supports microSD cards up to 128 GB, according to eufy’s storage FAQ. These specifications apply to the named models, not all video doorbells.

eufy gives an example that a 16 GB card may hold up to 180 days of footage at 30 recordings per day and 20 seconds per recording. That is a manufacturer example, not a guaranteed retention period: more frequent or longer recordings use more space, and actual capacity depends on settings and usage.

Cloud storage: access depends on service and plan

Cloud-stored footage is uploaded to the provider and accessed through its app or account. Google says Nest devices need Wi-Fi and a connection to Nest services to upload and save video. Ring says eligible devices on a plan or trial can record when motion is detected, the doorbell button is pressed, or Live View is started. Its privacy page states that motion-event videos are retained in the cloud for up to 180 days; the applicable features and terms depend on the product and plan and may change. Check the current Ring recording documentation before relying on a particular retention period.

Hybrid storage: buffering is not the same as full offline recording

Google documents that certain listed Nest devices can buffer a limited number of event clips internally during an internet or service outage and upload them after reconnection. This behavior is model-specific; it should not be assumed for every Nest doorbell or other brand. Google also notes that a wired Nest Doorbell (2nd gen) cannot record during a power outage. See Google’s explanation of Nest video storage and offline behavior for the devices it covers.

How long does a video doorbell keep recordings?

There is no standard retention period for all doorbells. Cloud retention is set by the service and plan, while local history is constrained by available storage and how many clips the doorbell records. For example, Ring states a maximum of 180 days for motion-event cloud videos, while eufy says cloud footage is automatically and permanently deleted according to the storage period of the user’s plan. For local storage, a card’s capacity does not translate to a fixed number of days because clip length and event frequency vary.

Before choosing a storage method, check the exact model’s maximum supported capacity, whether cloud history requires a paid plan, the plan’s retention rules, and what happens when storage fills or a subscription ends. A vendor’s stated maximum should not be treated as a promise that every clip will remain available for that entire period.

What should you check to protect doorbell footage?

“Encrypted” is only one part of the security picture. A useful review separates protection of the video itself from protection of the account and control over who can view or share clips.

  • Encryption: Check whether the manufacturer specifies encryption for data in transit, stored footage, or both. eufy states that the C31/C30 event-storage flow uses AES-256; its privacy page describes encryption in transit and cloud-transfer protections. These are vendor statements about the described systems, not independent proof that every product from the brand uses identical protections. See eufy’s privacy and security information.
  • Account protection: Use a unique, strong password and turn on multifactor authentication if the service offers it. eufy lists MFA among its privacy and security features. A secure storage system can still be exposed if an account is compromised.
  • Who has access: Limit shared users to people who need access, review permissions periodically, and remove former household members or devices that no longer need it. Check whether the app shows account sessions or connected devices.
  • Privacy and sharing controls: Review motion settings and privacy zones, and understand whether users can download or share clips. eufy says its app and web portal let users view, download, and delete footage and that its system includes privacy zones. Confirm the controls available for your exact model and current app version.
  • Deletion and retention: Find out how to delete recordings and whether cloud clips are automatically removed when the plan’s retention period ends. eufy says cloud footage is automatically and permanently deleted based on the plan’s storage period.

What the FTC’s Ring case illustrates

Security depends on organizational access and account safeguards as well as technical encryption. In a May 31, 2023 announcement, the Federal Trade Commission said it charged Ring with allowing employees or contractors broad access to customer videos and failing to implement basic privacy and security protections; the agency said those failures enabled hackers to take control of accounts, cameras, and videos. The announcement described a proposed $5.8 million payment, while later FTC case materials describe a settlement and privacy and security program. This is an FTC enforcement record concerning Ring’s practices addressed in that case, not a finding about every current Ring product or current practice. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said, “Ring’s disregard for privacy and security exposed consumers to spying and harassment.” See the FTC’s Ring case announcement and materials.

How to choose between local and cloud storage

Neither storage location guarantees privacy or uninterrupted recording. Local storage keeps clips closer to home and can reduce reliance on cloud history, but the supported capacity and outage behavior are model-specific. Cloud storage can make clips accessible through an account, but uploading requires the relevant network and service connection, and retention can depend on a plan. A hybrid system may offer a limited buffer, not continuous recording through every outage.
