Scientists do not assign fossil sex from size or shape alone. They treat sexual dimorphism—the physical differences between males and females of a species—as one possible explanation, then test it against age, individual variation, sample bias and the possibility that specimens belong to different species. When evidence cannot distinguish among those explanations, the responsible conclusion is that sex is unknown or dimorphism is not established.
Why a fossil’s sex is usually uncertain
Soft reproductive anatomy rarely survives fossilization, so an individual skeleton often cannot be identified as male or female. The Natural History Museum notes that the sex of the original Dippy Diplodocus skeleton cannot be known. A size difference between two skeletons is not a direct sex clue: it could reflect age, normal variation, or other causes.
Some evidence can come closer to identifying an individual’s sex. In fossil birds, medullary bone associated with egg production can provide a rare clue. Ancient DNA can identify genetic sex in some subfossils when DNA survives and suitable methods are available. Neither approach applies to every specimen or species. How researchers test whether sex could explain a difference
Check that the specimens are comparable
Researchers first ask whether the fossils plausibly belong to the same species and are at comparable stages of growth. A difference attributed to sex might instead reflect juveniles being compared with adults, ordinary variation among individuals, or two distinct species. Sexual dimorphism can itself complicate decisions about whether different-looking fossils represent separate species, so taxonomic identity must be considered rather than assumed. Evaluate the sample, not just a striking specimen
A pair of unusually large and small fossils is not enough to establish two sexes. With a sufficiently informative sample, researchers can compare the range and distribution of measurements and ask whether the observations fit one variable population or distinct groups. The Field Museum discusses substantial size variation among adult Maiasaura; that case illustrates why variation matters, not a universal conclusion about dinosaurs.
Collections may also be incomplete or unrepresentative. A 2019 study genetically sexed 277 mammalian subfossils and reported that about 75% of the sampled Pleistocene bison and brown bears were male. That finding applies to those study samples, not to all fossil collections or to dinosaurs; it shows why researchers should not assume a collection reflects a balanced population. Use statistics to estimate patterns, not label individuals
Researchers can estimate whether a population may show sexual dimorphism from measurements even when the sex of each fossil is unknown. But the result depends on factors such as sample size, the proportion of each sex represented, skewness in the data and how much individuals vary within each sex. Published methodological evaluations emphasize that these assumptions affect estimates; a Bayesian posterior-density approach, for example, represents uncertainty about the degree of dimorphism rather than turning a small sample into a certain answer. What makes an interpretation more convincing?
A sex-based explanation is more defensible when several kinds of evidence converge: a direct clue for an individual where available, a well-contextualized sample, consistent traits across specimens, and an analysis that accounts for uncertainty and possible sample bias. Researchers should also assess plausible alternatives—especially maturity, individual variation and taxonomic differences—rather than treating sexual dimorphism as the default explanation. - Individual identification: Is there evidence such as medullary bone or recoverable ancient DNA, or only a size or shape pattern?
- Sample quality: Are there enough specimens, and could missing remains or collection bias overrepresent an age group or sex?
- Alternative explanations: Could growth, ordinary variation or different species account for the observed traits?
- Statistical uncertainty: Does the method account for sample composition and within-group variation, and does it report uncertainty rather than assigning sexes by assumption?
When the evidence is not enough
If a sample is small, biased or difficult to classify, researchers may be unable to tell whether observed differences reflect sex. A pattern can be compatible with sexual dimorphism without proving that sex is its only cause. In those cases, “unknown” or “not established” is more accurate than labeling larger fossils male and smaller ones female.
